You Too Can Celebrate a NASCAR Christmas
By L.M. Burke
December 15, 2002
For the racing fanatics in your life - young and young at heart alike, here are a few ideas to celebrate everyone's favorite sport this holiday (off) season.
10 Drink hot cocoa from your favorite driver's mug while sporting your favorite driver's hat rather than your standard Santa hat. Hot cocoa . favorite driver's beverage sponsor, it's all the same. Just think - there must be a Ward Burton rein"Deer" antlers hat out there somewhere that could take the place of the Rudolph antlers your Better Half always makes you wear.
9 Celebrate your favorite driver in style. Temporary tattoos are always appropriate for the annual holiday picture. In fact, why not sport the whole drivers' suit? And Little Johnny can be the jackman, Little Jane the tire changer, and the Better Half the Crew Chief. (Isn't that just like real life, anyway? The Better Half calling all the shots.)
8 Practice your drivers' signature on your holiday cards.
Think how excited your friends and family will be to receive an "autographed" card from Jeff Gordon. Or better yet, our new Champion Tony Stewart.
7 Race car cakes are the perfect centerpiece for the holiday buffet. Dale Jr. red and Bobby Labonte green cakes are ideal for the Christmas table. Or go for a cool winter theme with Mark Martin, Sterling Marlin, and John Andretti cakes.
6 Stock-pile multi-purpose 1:64 scale race cars now! For, they can save your life during the holidays. They're perfect stocking stuffers, especially for children. And they're also great presents for Christmas countdown calendars. (If the cars
themselves won't fit into the pockets, print small "Good for one race car" coupons and let the kids pick from a grab bag.) Warning: You may wind up with more 1:64 race cars in your home than you ever wanted. Plan ahead and buy extra storage bins that you and your young ones can decorate race-style with NASCAR and driver bumper stickers and decals.
5 Decorate your tree exclusively in Hot Wheels, Team Beans stockings, and driver key chains, golf balls, flags, & ornaments. Just be careful to keep the Keebler Elf & Mr. Excitement, Ward & Junior, Robby & Junior, Robby & Jimmie, Happy & Biffle, Elliott & the toy ambulance far away from each other. And if you want your tree to safely make it through the holidays without incident, keep all Bodines off the tree - especially Todd.
4 Play the "Whoville" Game with a re-run of one of this season's races. Rather than consuming spirits each time "Who" is said (as in the original "Grinch" Game), toast the broadcasters each time "Jeff Gordon" is uttered during an NBC race or each time DW sings or invents words during a FOX race.
3 On your annual visit to see Santa, explain to him that
750-horsepower is way better than 9 reindeer! Surely, race fans, we can help Santa discover the wonder and excitement of NASCAR Winston Cup racing. Then again, is Santa already a race fan? Hey, is that BP I see under that beard?
2 Forget gingerbread and sugar cookies. Leave Santa an assortment of numbered cookies - representing your families' NASCAR allegiances. And while you could leave Santa an adult beverage, stick with milk. Afterall, you want Santa to drive safely - or we could always get Dale Jr. to serve as his designated driver!
1 Sing NASCAR Christmas Carols. "You know . Gordon and Johnson, and Spencer and Martin, Burton and Jarrett, and Earnhardt and Harvick, but do you recall the most famous driver of all."
And on December 26th, turn the Countdown to Christmas calendar into your own Countdown to Daytona. An obsessed race fan has to get through the off-season somehow! Reward yourself with extraordinary presents such as magazine subscriptions, 1:24 scale diecast, or on the day of the Winston Cup Preview, Daytona testing, and the teams' arrival in Daytona for Speedweeks. On the day of the 500, go all out and "surprise" yourself with that Sam Bass print you've always wanted.
