What Are The Real Problems At RCR?
By Joe "BumpStop" Foster
November 23, 2002
The 2002 Winston Cup season saw little progress at Richard Childress Racing. Headlines from Homestead this past week found Richard Childress embroiled in yet another attempt at musical crewman. Richard would go on to say in an interview that "there will be personnel changes." OK, I want you two guys to go over there and stand. Now you three guys come over here. I want you to do what you have been doing but try to look like there have been changes. The rest of you people are fired because I demand results and you have failed me. Is this disruption of employees anything new to RCR? Seems to me we have seen this ill attempt at people management before. Hey, I have an idea Richard! And who are you? I am the janitor here at RCR and have been cleaning the bathrooms at night. Oh really? Well let me tell you something mop boy. I am Richard Childress, the guy that stood beside the "Seven Time Winston Cup Champion" Dale Earnhardt and, I have a handle on this deal. What could you possible tell me about running a race team? Well Mr. Childress I was thinking that perhaps instead of blaming everything on the crews and all the fine folks that have worked day and night with you maybe just maybe you should.... GET RID OF THOSE TWO SPOILED BRAT DRIVERS THAT ARE RIPPING THIS ORGANIZATION TO SHREDS AND GET SOMEONE THAT CAN WIN! If RCR maintains their current way of thinking Richard will be missing that class act sponsorship of General Motors real soon. The bottom line with Robby Gordon is that he came equipped with his own sponsorship in Cingular. That is the wave of the future and in this economic climate we will see this get worse before it ever gets better. Gordon finished 20th in the points this year but I'm sure he has excuses for it just like the rest of his life. It's everyone else's fault for everything Robby Gordon has ever done. Kevin Harvick also had a great year finishing 21st in the points. Kevin Harvick tells stories well beyond his talent range. It isn't about your happy face showing us your motorhome during a rain delay Kevin, it's about winning races. Maybe you should look back in the archives and see how many times Dale Earnhardt gave interviews in his motorhome during rain delays. ZERO! Neither one of you spoiled brat drivers even come close to deserving to stand in the same garage in which Dale Earnhardt stood. You make RCR look like a third rate driving school held on the weekends for the betterment of you trying to act like you know what you are doing. We would all be better off if both of you turned in the keys to the executive bathroom at RCR and went down to Burger King and started asking "ya want fries wit dat." Richard, if you want to shake things up and bring change, start by cutting a couple checks for these two so called drivers and send them both down the road. How in this world can we possibly believe that reorganization of bodies in a shop will bring noted positive results on the track? How much longer do you think General Motors is going to hang on for this goat and pony show, Richard? Drivers seem to do better when they don't have these long term contracts in which you so firmly believe Richard. Signing Robby and Kevin to anything further than a minute by minute contract was a mistake. It isn't about their comfort level, it's about results. You know folks, I was a Dale Earnhardt fan through thick and thin. I admired Childress and the path the two friends seemed to be going down. This thing has grown beyond Richard. I am not sure if he just can see it or he is trying to appease the needs of hungry sponsorship. These teams were not even close to finishing in the top ten this year and that in itself is a disgrace to what was envisioned. At the current rate RCR will look pitiful in a matter of two more seasons. All the riches from class act sponsorship that Dale Earnhardt brought on board will be gone. General Motors will find someone else to go with. I beg you to cut your losses now Richard in these two non deserving brats, they are dragging you down. For a very reasonable fee I can come in and do it for you. You won't even have to be there. You can go off to Montana, sit on a mountain top and become one with the racing Gods. OK, listen up! Kevin, Robby, both of you finished out of the top ten this year and we are really excited about your future in the sport but, you know what? I am sorry that finishing poorly had to happen on your last day here at RCR. Get your stuff because it's over. See how simple that is? The words seem to flow in a mystical manner projecting results in their wake. You can change the crews, paint the building, bring in an administrative specialist, and join a self help group but, the problem is with the drivers behind the wheel. If you noticed I didn't mention one foul word about Jeff Green, whom has had to struggle with the leftovers dropped by the two wonder brats. Jeff is doing an admirable job and is advised to keep up the good work. I like the way Jeff Green takes responsibility for what happens on and off the track. It's a shame that Jeff Green even has to show up to this general butt chewing coming to RCR. If it's any help Jeff, be sure to take this article with you and let the brats know that we didn't say anything bad about you man.
