What An End To A Great Season

By Denise Thompson

November 21, 2002

Nobody is perfect but, Jack Roush not getting the respect to have his appeal, even after he filed this hearing with NASCAR, was a big disappointment to many NASCAR fans.

What many fans don't understand is how can an owner of a car file for an appeal and not be heard. They never even interviewed Jack Roush. Just three guys sitting in a room discussing what should be done. What kind of justice is that?

This is a job and a career and in any job that has policy and procedures to follow, also has the rules and regulations in filing a hearing for wrongful termination, or as in Roush's case, the penalty that was given to him, Mark Martin and Ben Leslie for the "spring" not being in regulation to NASCAR rules.

It looked like the Board that made this decision not to even hear Jack Roush already had their minds made up and decided that Roush doesn't need to be heard. Everyone is entitled to a fair hearing and this was not a fair hearing. Jack Roush should have had the right to be heard after filing his appeal.

The "spring" in question was not found to be illegal due to the spring compression, but due to the actual winding coils being too short. Although, Jack Roush said it was a default from the manufacture..... I think Richard Petty said it best: "In racing it is what you can get by with that wins races." (Thanks "POPS

If you were to ask any reporter who was the most perfect driver to interview, Tony Stewart would be at the bottom of that list. However, many fans are tired of reporters making a mountain out of a mole hill or as in NASCAR lingo, building a car out of a lug nut, over something Stewart says or a gesture he makes.

I am not saying that Tony didn't deserve the actions that both NASCAR and Home Depot took against him when he hit a reporter during the season and sort of speaking "ordered" to get help through anger management counseling, but some of these reporters are going ballistic just because it's Tony Stewart.

Many reporters are treating him like he's Hurricane Hugo, those that don't run, want to ride the storm out to see what damage he does and then file a suit to get more media attention.

Many NASCAR fans are wondering what it's going to take for Mike Helton to put some kind of regulation or boundary's on reporters to keep this from happening to other drivers in the up coming years.

As many fans have watched these "side shows," what a way for Tony to finish this season, 2002 WINSTON CUP CHAMPION, and by more than 25 points.

Maybe that will help Jack Roush, before next season begins, to get his posture back and acquire those 3 C's that an owner needs to have in NASCAR, to stay calm, cool, and collected.

Until next time, GOD BLESS YOU ALL
