Looking Back On The Season

By Denise Thompson

November 17, 2002

As we watch the last race of the season, and that Checkered Flag is out waving for the last time of this season. Some of us NASCAR Fans will begin to have what most of us call our NASCAR "WITHDRAWALS" and finding ourselves remembering some of the events that took place throughout this season.

We watched Dale Jarrett walk to his pit stall after the "BIG ONE" in Daytona at the Pepsi 400. We will remember Dale Earnhardt Jr. running from his car to Steve Park after their "sitting on the edge of our seats" crash at the Pocono 500 in Pennsylvania, and Park miraculously walked away without sustaining any injuries. Dale Jr. was the first to arrive at Park's side and stayed there while the safety workers was able to free Park from his severely damaged car.

We will remember the "BIG ONES" and we will remember the crashes that made us take a deep breath and then that last sigh of relief that everyone was okay.

But I want to take you back to those that you may not remember. The wreck that Sterlin Marlin, who drives the #40 Coors light car, had when he sustained neck injuries and put him out of the remaining race season. Due to Marlin's injury we got to see a bright young man come to the WINSTON CUP SERIES, Jamie McMurray.

McMurray set a new record in Winston Cup by winning the second race of his career, a record held by Kevin Harvick when he won in his third try at Atlanta last year.

We also saw other new drivers to the Winston Cup series, Jimmy Johnson and Ryan Newman, both battling for "Rookie of the Year" honors.

I know most of you have some great moments that this season has brought to you, these were just a few that my family, and friends have talked about this season.

As this season comes to an end, you all enjoy your Holiday's be safe and GOD BLESS YOU ALL.

Remember this on New Years Eve "Friends, don't let friends drink and drive." Sharing NASCAR moments wouldn't be the same without your friends to share it with.
