Michigan Notebook ~ Sunday
An Opinion

August 20, 2007
By Connie Felix

Good Tony

It may have rained on Sunday postponing the race until Monday, but Friday the sun was shining as Tony Stewart walked through the NASCAR Nextel Cup & Busch garage at Michigan International Speedway, signing autographs for race fans. Often we hear complaints regarding Stewart's fan skills, how he feels signing autographs is a punishment. Remember it isn't always a given with him.

Roush Thoughts

Nextel selected Jack Roush for their Friday morning press conference at Michigan International Speedway. Roush Fenway Racing fields Fords driven by Carl Edwards, Matt Kenseth, Jamie McMurray, Greg Biffle and David Ragan in the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series.

  • NASCAR's new car will require 20% less cars each season, but will increase labor by 70-80%.
  • Asked which of his drivers could win this weekend. "David Ragan might be a long shot based on the fact that he’s a rookie. But, everybody else has either recently won or is very hungry and anxious to win."
  • When the idea of an investor first came about, Roush didn't like the idea - the last thing he wanted was to have to explain things to someone day in and day out. In the end he is happy with the Fenway relationship.

    Onion Drives Busch 2008

Driver door frame signature reads: 'The Onion' on the No. 03 Germain Toyota driven by Todd Bodine in the NASCAR Busch Series. What started as a disrespect from Dale Earnhardt Jr. several years ago after an incident between the two drivers during a Busch race has turned into a popular nickname for Bodine.

With a huge smile, Bodine confirmed the Germain team has plans to run the Busch Series in 2008 pending sponsorship.

    Roush Shop Rat

Jack Roush was presented with the "2007 Master Shop Rat Award", on Saturday at Michigan International Speedway. The Shop Rat Foundation, definitely found a skilled craftsman who has built and invented things all his life. The award ceremony took place in conjunction with the fist annual Manufacturers Day at MIS.

    Wind Tunnel eXtreme

Wind Tunnel eXtreme, announced at Michigan International Speedway, a group of investors have spent the past 18 months planning the world's most advanced Wind Tunnel, scheduled to open in the third quarter of 2009. The location was not disclosed nor the prices or how it would help NASCAR's Car of Tomorrow program. It was stated, you must be a member by signing up for 25-ten hour sessions per year for a five year period in order to use the facility. Two years from startup the company is 54% sold out on time. They expect to hire 30 employees with starting salaries of $83,000, and have two 10 hour shifts.

    EA Sports Craftsman Challenge

The competitions are scheduled to hit 11 cities overall, future stops along the 2007 EA SPORTS Craftsman NASCAR Challenge include: St. Louis, Mo.; Richmond, Va.; Loudon, N.H.; Dover, Del.; Talladega, Ala.; Charlotte, N.C.; Martinsville, Va.; Atlanta, Ga. The “In-Store” Tournaments will be hosted at designated Sears and Kmart retail stores in each city. All Tournament play will be conducted using NASCAR 08 on the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system.

    $50,000 Could Be Added

AAA has just posted a sweepstakes online for members and non-members throughout the U.S., it celebrates 50 million members and the 50th Daytona 500 in 2008. You have a chance to WIN four tickets to the Daytona 500, four nights at Walt Disney World Resort plus travel and a $500 Visa Gift card. AAA has declared, if a AAA sponsored car wins the Daytona 500 in 2008, an additional $50,000 will be awarded to the grand prize winner.

    RacingForWildlife

Ryan Newman, announced at Michigan International Speedway, he has made an agreement with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, as they restore Mill Lake Youth Camp, located 30 miles north of the track. Newman visited the camp and was impressed with the project, agreeing to allow his connection with the NASCAR community to promote the project. Ad campaigns will show Newman, as he enjoys the camp surroundings. Once restored the camp will accommodate over 140 people, hoping to introduce a new generation of kids to the great outdoors.

    Programs Available Online

Collectors of NASCAR Track Official Race Programs in the past have relied on eBay or similar means to complete their collection. Now the basic track program from current selected events can be purchased online. In the past, vendors have stated it was impossible to obtain a program once the weekend races were over.
