Talladega Superspeedway Notebook ~ Saturday
An Opinion

April 27, 2008

By Connie Felix

Racing For Wildlife Needs Your Help

Ryan Newman has again loaned his name to the Racing for Wildlife Conservation Fund, it was announced Friday at Talladega Superspeedway that the second project is 1,100 acres in the Talladega National Forest. The effort will protect the 8 mile crest of Rebecca Mountain, and complete a portion of the Pinhoti Trail, which connects Rebecca Mountain to the Appalachian National Scenic Trail in Georgia. The Fund needs to raise an additional $550,000 to complete the project and hope race fans will help. Bobby Allison, was on hand as a long time resident of Alabama and four time winner at Talladega Superspeedway. Allison no longer lives in Alabama.

Dale Jr. Will Stay Away

Dale Jr. confirmed Friday at Talladega Superspeedway, he will not attend the April 29th, annual Dale Earnhardt Day event that honors the Birthday of his late father. Taylor Earnhardt will do some barrel racing and put on a demonstration with her horse and Kerry Earnhardt will sign autographs along with DEI drivers. Dale Jr. was appreciative of the drivers attendance as he knew it wasn't in their contracts.

ESPN’s “NASCAR Now” will broadcast a one-hour show from Dale Earnhardt Inc. on Tuesday, April 29 from 6-7 p.m. (EST). Tanner in the Morning of Charlotte, N.C.’s WSOC-FM 103.7 will host a live radio broadcast from 6-10 a.m., Sirius Satellite Radio will be on hand in the afternoon and Primetime with the Packman from Charlotte’s WFNZ-AM 610 from the event from 3-7 p.m.(EST).

A Couple Thoughts

  • Jon Woods - "It isn't a matter of getting your friends to help, I'm a small guy and need someone that will fit into my seat." (Woods also ran the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race in Kansas this weekend with Brandon Whitt practicing and qualifying the truck .)

  • Dale Earnhardt Jr. - "Tony (Stewart) could become his own Joe Gibbs!"

    Ryan Bought A Bow

Ryan Newman spent a couple days fishing in the Talladega area this week prior to the NASCAR Sprint Cup, Aaron's 499 race. He mentioned, only going hunting a couple times but was looking forward to doing more of it. Seems back in 2006 he bought a Bow at Cabela's just outside the Kansas Speedway, only going Turkey hunting twice since the purchase. His father and Grandfather both hunted, but Ryan was always busy getting ready for a race and never had time for the sport.

Stating he did not recycle, but thought it was a good idea, Ryan mentioned they had planted a large vegetable garden this year and that was his bid at helping the environment!

Donate Blood Regularly Not Just For Disasters

People can give blood up to six times a year, or every 56 days, yet only about 37 percent of blood donors donate more than once each year. Visit and sign up to win when you give. The web site makes it easy to schedule blood donation appointments online and offers frequent donors the chance to get points, which can be exchanged for racing gear, including caps, T-shirts, jackets and limited edition die-cast cars. Race fans can also join Red Cross Racing at one of the nine NASCAR races where a Red Cross trailer will be on the midway. All participants who sign up between April 24 and October 1 are automatically entered into a sweepstakes for an all-expense paid trip for two to the Checker Auto Parts 500 at Phoenix International Speedway on November 9, 2008. Tracks include: Talladega, New Hampshire, Chicago, Michigan, Richmond, Kansas, Charlotte, Texas and Phoenix. Greg Biffle's No. 16 3M/American Red Cross Ford will carry the Red Cross logo at those select tracks.

Truex Jr. Helps WSOC-TV Give Big

WSOC-TV (ABC), Charlotte, N.C., was given $10,000 by Oprah Winfrey as was numerous other affiliates across the country. Their mission as in "Oprah's Big Give" was to see how much they could raise in this case to help children through the Second Harvest Metrolina Food Bank. The Martin Truex Jr. Foundation quickly stepped up donating diecast cars and enlisting help from fellow NASCAR drivers and sponsors. The fundraiser was so successful that Oprah's staff gave the station another $30,000 to see how much further they could take their giving.

    Where Is He Now?

Jimmy Kitchens, former ARCA and NASCAR Nationwide Series racer and native Alabama resident, celebrated his 46th Birthday on Saturday, April 26. Kitchens is a four-time champion at Birmingham International Raceway and has over 200 feature wins throughout the southeast in a late model stock car. He raced ARCA from 1997-1999 and ran Nationwide cars from 1998-2005. His last Nationwide Series start came at Talladega in 2005 where he finished 15th. Currently he is the spotter for NASCAR Sprint Cup Driver Clint Bowyer and the No. 07 DirecTV/Jack Daniels Chevrolet.

    Good Ole Days Reminder

Back in the 1960's, race fans would regularly spot NASCAR Sprint Cup drivers and their racecars in parking lots outside the track. Riverside Raceway comes to mind and spotting Dave Marcus and his car & crew in the parking lot of a local Holiday Inn, late the night before the big road course event. Arriving at Talladega Superspeedway early afternoon on Wednesday, that memory came to mind as we spotted NASCAR Nationwide Series drivers, Johnny Chapman's No. 90 & Larry Gunselman's No. 91 MSRP Motorsports Chevrolet's in the credential's parking lot. Cars were jacked up, hoods open and it looked like the entire hauler had been emptied into the lot.

    Division 88

Captain Jack Hanzlik, Chief of Naval Personnel, public affairs officer and Dale Earnhardt Jr. announced that as of May 24, 2008, the first 88 men and women to enlist in the Navy will be in a special Dale Jr. Division 88. Recruits who sign up will ship to Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Illinois in late August and will be commissioned by Earnhardt Jr. after initial in processing. Earnhardt Jr. will again visit "his" recruits upon completion of their seven to eight week course. Visit www.navy.com/dalejr or your local recruiter for further information.

Ford Left Out Of Indy Tire Test

In preparation for this year’s Brickyard 400 at the Indianpolis Motor Speedway, The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company brought three drivers – Kurt Busch (Dodge), Dale Earnhardt Jr. (Chevrolet) and Brian Vickers (Toyota) – to the legendary track for a tire test this week. The test ran this past Tuesday and Wednesday and, by all accounts, provided NASCAR’s exclusive tire supplier with the information it needed.
