Stewart Penalized 25/25
NASCAR announced today that Tony Stewart has been fined $25,000 and penalized 25 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series driver championship points, as a result of using inappropriate language during a post-race televised interview following his victory Sunday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Stewart, driver of the No. 20 Chevrolet, retains his fifth-place standing in the series points, with his total points reduced to 2,599. Stewart violated Section 12-4-A of the series rule book (actions detrimental to stock car racing) by using the inappropriate language. In addition, Stewart’s car owner, Joe Gibbs, has been penalized 25 car owner championship points because of the infraction.

Brickyard Ratings Off 14.6%
ESPN's coverage of Sunday's Allstate 400 NASCAR Nextel Cup race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway earned a 4.1 overnight rating, Street & Smith's SportsBusiness Daily reports. The cable station's rating was 14.6 percent lower than the overnight figure in 2006, when the race was aired on network television by NBC. (scenedaily.com)

Sorenson’s Team Collects First Pit Crew Challenge Win
Reed Sorenson’s No. 41 crew earned its first Checkers®/Rally’s® Double Drive-Thru Challenge win of the season during Sunday’s Allstate 400® at the Brickyard. Starting from the pole and on its way to a fifth-place finish, the Target® team spent 219.402 seconds on pit road at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, becoming the 11th team to take home pit crew challenge honors this season.

“The guys on the Target team did a great job all weekend in Indy, first getting the car ready for the race and then on pit road,” said Sorenson. “We had solid pit stops all day and the over-the-wall guys stepped up to the plate when it counted late in the race. Our last stop was under green and after the cycle we gained two spots on the track, The quick pit stop definitely put me in position to finish inside of the top five. I couldn’t be more proud of the effort everyone puts forth each weekend.”

Sorenson’s crew will be presented with an $11,000 check by Checkers/Rally’s for winning the weekly competition. An additional $111,150 prize will be presented to the pit crew team with the most wins at the completion of the 36-race Nextel Cup schedule.

The No. 41 Chip Ganassi Racing team consists of: Chuck White (jackman), Marty Forcier (front-tire carrier), Bobby Burrell (front-tire changer), Adam Moser (rear-tire carrier), Jason Sheet (rear-tire changer), Randy Hildreth (gasman), Eric “Pee Wee” Hoyle (catch can), and Doug Spees (eighth-man). The team is led by crew chief Jimmy Elledge and the pit crew coach is Phil Horton.

Mark Martin’s/Aric Almirola’s No. 01 crew leads the season-long Checkers/Rally’s Double Drive-Thru Challenge standings with four wins. To win, teams are required to finish on the lead lap while spending the least amount of time on pit road. Checkers/Rally’s is in its third season as title sponsor for the Pit Crew Challenge.

Bourdais Says No To Cup
The partnership of Robert Yates Racing and Champ Car's Newman-Haas-Lanigan Racing, announced Friday at the Speedway, led to speculation that three-time Champ Car champion Sebastien Bourdais might be part of the deal. But the Frenchman, who voiced some interest in stock cars after winning an International Race of Champions event in 2005, shot down that notion, at least for now.

In San Jose, Calif., for Sunday's Champ Car World Series event, Bourdais told a media gathering that some people are misinterpreting the partnership as the first step in a full-time move to NASCAR by Champ Car's top team.

"They're just going to bring some methods and some organization and some knowledge," he said. "It also is completely unrelated to what I will end up doing in the future. So I just think people are getting everything mixed up a little bit." Bourdais has tested with Formula One's Scuderia Toro Rosso team and could be headed there as a replacement for Scott Speed in 2008.()

Busch Series Fines Handed Out
NASCAR announced today that Greg Biffle has been fined $5,000 and placed on probation until Dec. 31, for failing to fulfill his post-race media obligations this past Saturday night, following the NASCAR Busch Series race at O’Reilly Raceway Park in Indianapolis. Biffle was found to be in violation of Sections 12-4-A (actions detrimental to stock car racing) and 12-4-H (violation of sub-section 7-2B: Failure to meet obligation of an accepted entry). Biffle, driver of the No. 16 Ford, finished second in the event. In addition to the winning driver, second and third-place finishers, plus the highest-finishing rookie of the year candidate must report for post-race interviews.

Also, two NASCAR Busch Series crew chiefs have been fined $5,000 and placed on probation until Dec. 31 due to violations at Indianapolis:

  • Chris Rice, crew chief on the No. 01 Chevrolet driven by Shelby Howard;
  • Chuck Meyers, crew chief on the No. 1 Chevrolet driven by J.J. Yeley.

During opening inspection, both crew chiefs were found in violation of Section 12-4-A, 12-4-Q (car, car parts, components and/or equipment not conforming to NASCAR rules) and Section 20A-5.9D(4) (unapproved intake manifold modifications to the plenum area).
    Biffle's Statement On Fine
The following is a statement from Greg Biffle, concerning his fine for not attending the post-race press conference at O'Reilly Raceway Park last Saturday night: "First and foremost, I would like to apologize to the media who were present in the press box at ORP last weekend. I talked to every reporter on pit road which included television, radio and print. I also offered to stay and speak to any other media member at the track. I believe there was a misunderstanding on my part as to how we would be getting to the press box and at the time it seemed that we would be trying to walk in the opposite direction of thousands of fans trying to exit the grandstands. I want to be clear that I was very excited about the second place finish and was in no hurry to leave, it just seemed unreasonable at the time to try to get to the press box as the grandstands were emptying in the opposite direction. I have always been a big supporter of the NASCAR Busch Series and willing to help promote the series in any way. I understand the importance of the media obligations related to participation in all NASCAR Series and once again apologize to anyone who may have felt slighted this weekend at ORP."

Steve Wallace Assaulted In Indianapolis ~ Is OK
19 year-old RWI Racing NASCAR Busch Series driver, Steve Wallace, is OK following being attacked in an attempted mugging Sunday evening in Indianapolis. Wallace suffered only minor cuts and abrasions in the attack and will compete as scheduled in this weekend’s NASCAR Busch Series event at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal, Canada.

Wallace was attacked by a group of at least three men upon exiting a convenience store in Indianapolis Sunday night, where he stayed to watch the running of the Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Wallace participated in the NASCAR Busch Series event at O’Reilly Raceway Park the previous evening.

Upon entering the convenience store, the men commented on Wallace’s watch, a gift given to him by a sponsor after he earned his second career pole position at Nashville Superspeedway in June. After exiting the convenience store, Wallace was jumped and attacked by the group of men, who were attempting to rob him of his watch.

The men later fled the scene after being unsuccessful in robbing Wallace. A suspect was apprehended later that evening and is being held in an Indianapolis jail.

Wood Brothers/JTG driver Jon Wood was treated and released from a local hospital this morning following a single vehicle accident on his way to work.

Wood’s pickup truck has a modified suspension system with pneumatic air bags on the chassis. Eyewitnesses reported that shortly after 8:00 a.m. this morning they witnessed a failure of his right front air bag, causing the truck to veer off the roadway into the woods.

He was treated for a cut on his head and a bruising on his arm, but was released shortly thereafter.
