NASCAR Rejects No. 31 Paint Scheme
NASCAR has rejected proposed paint schemes featuring AT&T's "Go Phone" and the AT&T Mobility tagline "More Bars in More Places" as AT&T seeks a way to remain on the No. 31 Richard Childress Racing car, according to AT&T. -- AT&T, in a motion filed today in U.S. District Court asking the court to expedite another preliminary injunction hearing, called NASCAR's actions "unreasonable and vindictive" and indicated that its Go Phone scheme was similar to one used in May 2005.

"NASCAR insisted that not only must AT&T Mobility remove the 'AT&T' name and logo immediately, but also that AT&T Mobility feature the very name, 'Cingular,' that AT&T Mobility has spent millions of dollars removing from the marketplace," AT&T states in its motion.

AT&T had won an injunction on breach of contract grounds as U.S. District Court Judge Marvin Shoob ruled May 18 that NASCAR's grandfather clause in its licensing agreement that gives RCR a car number allowed for the Cingular logos to be changed to AT&T following their December 2006 merger.

But the U.S. 11th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that because the grandfather clause (enacted in 2004 when Nextel became the primary sponsor of the Cup Series) was designed to benefit RCR and not necessarily Cingular, that AT&T could not sue under breach of contract grounds.

AT&T said it attempted to compromise this week by not including the AT&T globe and the Cingular name on its Go Phone scheme but that NASCAR rejected it Wednesday because the Cingular logo was too small.

"AT&T Mobility has removed the AT&T logo and name from the car, consistent with the Court of Appeal's decision," AT&T states in its motion to have a hearing as early as the second week of September. "That should be enough for NASCAR and Sprint Nextel.

"But now NASCAR wants to ensure that AT&T Mobility's customers are confused by insisting (apparently at the behest of Sprint Nextel) that AT&T Mobility prominently and with large and bold type display 'Cingular' on the #31 car when AT&T Mobility is in the process of completing its name transition."

The actual motion for a new preliminary injunction will be filed Friday in Shoob's court, AT&T indicated in its filing Thursday...MORE...(scenedaily.com)

“Race to the Dream” Contest
As the NASCAR season heads into the climatic, 10-race “Chase for the NEXTEL Cup,” Ford is giving race fans the opportunity to experience the thrills and excitement of being a NASCAR race-car driver first-hand – including actual competition in NASCAR Ford Fusions on the track at Homestead-Miami Speedway – by entering the Built Ford Tough “Race to the Dream” Ultimate Fan Experience.

This marks the fourth year of the Race to the Dream promotion, sponsored by Ford Trucks. It launches on Saturday, Aug. 25 via www.racetothedream.com, the official “Race to the Dream” website. One finalist will be selected every week until the contest closes on Oct. 30.

“The Built Ford Tough Race to the Dream Ultimate Fan Experience has been a major success in its first three years and we expect more of the same in 2007,” said Todd Eckert, Ford Truck and SUV Communications Manager. “We’ve connected with thousands of consumers and provided them with an opportunity to learn more about the best-selling and most capable lineup of trucks in America – Ford F-Series – while giving them a chance to win a racing experience only Built Ford Tough Trucks and Ford Racing could provide.

“We know that NASCAR fans are also truck enthusiasts, so it’s a great opportunity for us to combine two of their favorite passions into a truly unique experience. Competing in NASCAR Fusions on the track and in Ford F-150s and Super Duties in the dirt at the same place where NASCAR will crown its champions one week later, is something our nine contestants will never forget.”

Fans are invited to visit the website to enter the promotion. Each registrant can earn additional “entries” into the sweepstakes by correctly answering trivia questions about Built Ford Tough Trucks and Ford Racing. A new set of five questions will be available each week of the promotion.

The end result will pit nine lucky fans against each other in a head-to-head driving competition in NASCAR Ford Fusions and Ford F-Series trucks on Nov. 10 at Homestead-Miami Speedway, site of Ford Championship Weekend. The winner of the driving competition will be crowned the “Ultimate Fan Champion” and will remain in Miami with their guest for Ford Championship Weekend, Nov. 16-18. While there, they will be treated to racing action, behind-the-scenes activities and more, including:

All areas access to all three Ford Championship Weekend NASCAR races

  • Being appointed honorary starter for the Ford 300 NASCAR Busch Series race on Nov. 17
  • Riding in the pace truck at the Ford 200 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race on Nov. 16
  • “Meet and greets” with Ford NASCAR drivers and personalities throughout the weekend
  • A live national television interview capturing the excitement of the Race to the Dream experience
  • Being an honorary member of the No. 21 Wood Brothers crew for driver Bill Elliott during the Ford 400 NASCAR Nextel Cup Series race on Nov. 18

No. 2 Team Wins Pit Crew Award
Kurt Busch’s over-the-wall crew had two reasons to celebrate when they left Michigan International Speedway Tuesday. Not only did Busch win the rained-delayed NEXTEL Cup event, but his No. 2 Penske Racing crew also took top honors in the weekly Checkers®/Rally’s® Double Drive-Thru Challenge.

“Just like I said after the race, this win was indeed a total team effort and for my guys to win the Checkers/Rally's Double Drive-Thru Challenge is very fitting,” said Busch, whose win was his 17th overall career victory and second at MIS. “They keep on getting better and better and, just like our entire program, we are showing the great consistency that a championship-caliber team needs.”

“The guys were awesome out on pit road and this award is the icing on the cake for a great race win,” added crew chief Pat Tryson. “They were flawless on a day where it seemed every other team faced problems. I’m so proud of our guys for winning the Checkers/Rally’s award and we look forward to getting our picture made with the big check.”

Busch’s over-the-wall crew will be presented with an $11,000 check by Checkers/Rally’s for winning the weekly challenge. An additional $111,150 prize will be presented to the pit crew with the most wins at the completion of the 36-race Nextel Cup schedule.

The No. 2 crew, which spent 206.320 seconds on pit lane, includes: Ray Gallaghan (jackman), David Littau (front-tire carrier), Jay Hackney (front-tire changer), Larry Robinett (rear-tire carrier), Travis Johnson (rear-tire changer), Chris Williams (gasman), Steve Williams (catch can) and Dustin Coonfield (eighth man).

The No. 01 crew leads the season-long Checkers/Rally’s Double Drive-Thru Challenge standings with four wins. To win, teams are required to finish on the lead lap while spending the least amount of time on pit road. Checkers/Rally’s is in its third season as title sponsor for the Pit Crew Challenge.

    Benson Wins Bristol Truck Race
Johnny Benson postponed a pit stop and then held off Brendan Gaughan to win the Trucks Series' O'Reilly 200 on Wednesday night. When most drivers on the lead lap pitted after a caution on Lap 35, Benson and crew chief Trip Bruce decided to wait and have a fresh set of tires later on in the race over Bristol Motor Speedway's new surface meant to make passing easier. Benson finally pitted when a caution came out just past the midway point, and with new tires and a full tank of gas, there was no stopping him.

"We did the same thing at Darlington in 2004, and it paid off for us there," Bruce said. "We both agreed on what fresh tires could do for us. It's hard to hold somebody off at the end when they have tires."

Mark Martin finished third, followed by Mike Skinner and Rick Crawford. Skinner's top-five finish allowed him to increase his points lead over Ron Hornaday Jr. to 92 points. In the past, track position was more important than fresh tires at Bristol -- Martin drove on the same set of tires for the last 170 laps of last year's race and won easily. But on the brand-new surface, Benson's fresh rubber allowed him to move up from 17th after the restart and then hold off a charge by Gaughan at the end.

"It's unbelievable," Benson said of the new concrete. "It is way, way cool and just a pleasure to race on."(nascar.com)
