Connie's Charlotte NASCAR Sunday Notebook
By Connie Felix
May 26, 2003
Seriously Racin' Bubba Bruton Smith has done it again with Racin' Bubba, which made it's debut this weekend at Lowe's Motor Speedway, priced at just $5.00 each and four inches tall it is sure to be a hit with collectors.
Over $5 Million Prize Money Competitors will split $5,396,853 in today's running of the NASCAR's Coca-Cola 600 at Lowe's Motor Speedway. Remember back in 1960:
The Rookie Stripe Numerous questions have arose lately regarding the yellow stripe on the rear bumper of a car driven by a rookie driver. That yellow stripe use to mean "look out" danger within sight, today that isn't 100% true. Mike Bliss has completed a season on the Winston Cup Circuit and participated in their Raybestos Rookie award program, this makes him ineligible for the Busch Series Raybestos Rookie award in 2003. However, NASCAR is requiring Bliss to run the yellow stripe at any track where he has not competed in a Winston Cup event.
Boris Said, Said Too Much
Currently Said is serving a 45 day suspension, which began on May 1st, in the Trans-Am Series. Earlier this year, Said was fined $5,000, of which $3,000 was suspended, and he was placed on probation for violating Trans-Am Series rule 1.11.1.8., "Public criticism of the Series, its officials or sponsors," rule 1.11.1.9., "Unsportsmanlike conduct," and 1.11.1.11., "Inappropriate, objectionable, or profane language or gestures." When the punitive action taken against Boris had not proven to be successful in altering his conduct and the situation occurred again the Series assessed $7,500 in penalties and fines plus the 45 day suspension, and reinstatement of the previous $3,000 fine.
Real or TV Tricks
Totally NASCAR aired a segment with Sean Pragano and Kasey Kahne this week, where Sean gave Kasey a major haircut. Knowing that things aren't always what they seem, I asked Sean, who admitted that indeed he was the barber and only a minor touchup was done by a professional. The trick comes about when the No. 38 was shaved into the back of the hair, it wasn't Kahne's head.
A Lap An Hour Lowe's Motor Speedway has had their share of rain this weekend, keeping the five jet dryers busy. The dryers run at a speed of one and a half miles per hour, taking an hour to complete a lap. Humidity makes a difference but normally two hours is needed to dry the track at a cost per minute of $5.00 or $300.00 per hour. In addition a Trak Vak is utilized to remove water, since it can travel up to 60 MPH and has a holding tank of 600 gallons, it removes puddles and moisture at a faster rate. The Trak Vak is a prototype and plans are to have such a vehicle at all Speedway Motorsports, Inc. tracks.
Thoughts and Rumors
Exiting Motor Home Dangerous Task Greg Biffle went camping during the off weekend before California, falling coming out of the Motor Home, he re-injured his left wrist that hadn't healed properly from a previous incident. Nothing is broken, only muscles and ligaments in stress. Biffle has been wearing a brace during the races not to aggravate the situation further and it should be eliminated in the next couple weeks.
