Martinsville Notebook ~ Sunday
An Opinion

October 22, 2007

Feeling 21

Dario Franchitti, referred to by wife Ashley Judd as "This Dear Sweet Man", has been honest in describing why him and others like Jacques Villeneuve are coming to NASCAR from competing series. Not only is it a challenge, they are learning and applying something new and it makes them feel like they were 21 years old again.

  • Dario has been doing numerous testing to get familiar with his new role with Chip Ganassi, 100 laps at Carraway Speedway plus time at Memphis Motorsports Park.
  • Media chuckled, as Dario explained the language barrier, everything is called something different in NASCAR from IndyCar. Example the Garage is no longer a Paddock, nor is the Hauler a Transporter or Holler.
  • Signing a three year contract is new, previously with Andretti Green Racing in IndyCar, Dario had one year deals and at the time he liked it that way. The new commitment to NASCAR is serious and he plans to be here for the long haul.
  • Bumping in the IndyCar Series is always disastrous, one journalist asked how Dario was going to get use to this aspect of NASCAR racing. Without much thought he replied, "I was a teammate to Paul Tracy for five years!"
  • A Bike accident resulting in rods being placed in his stomach made the new experience of getting in and out of a race car window a challenge at first for Franchitti.

    Retake

Jared Fogle, Grand Marshall of Sunday's race and well known spokesperson for Subway Restaurants, was very animated as cameras filmed him on pit road between turns one and two, Sunday morning before the Subway 500, NASCAR Nextel Cup Series race at Martinsville Speedway.

    Remembering A Friend

Martinsville infield media center is small and personal, a proper place for his piers to remember, Ray Cooper, Dodge Manufacturer Rep, who lost his battle with cancer on October 13, 2007. Where his laptop lay year after year, a friend attached a gold plaque reading "COOP" and placed a Dodge cap on top of his chair. It literally put a lump in your throat and more than a tear in your eye. I truly hope this fine man knew how much he will be missed and that he was loved by so many.

    One Out Of 2000

The State of Virginia gave a fitting honor to Martinsville Speedway this week as the track celebrates their 60th year. Virginia has more than 2,000 historic road markers, but this is the first to honor a speedway. The historic marker reads as follows: “H. Clay Earles (1913-1999) opened Martinsville Speedway in 1947 with seating for 750. The National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) first raced here in 1948. Martinsville Speedway was one of eight tracks to host the inaugural 1949 season of NASCAR’s Strictly Stock division, later called Winston Cup and then NEXTEL Cup racing. It is the only original NASCAR track still hosting the highest division as of 2007. It features a short .526-mile track and seats more than 68,000.”
