Michigan Notebook ~ Saturday An Opinion
August 19, 2007 By Connie Felix
Dale Jarrett and AAA AAA announce a new 'Show Your Card & Save' program with UPS stores across the country starting September 1, 2007. AAA members will save 15% on products and services plus 5% savings on shipping. Dale Jarrett was present at Michigan International Speedway for the Friday announcement, receiving a plaque from AAA. It was to honor Jarrett's first NASCAR Nextel Cup win 16 years ago this weekend at Michigan. David Ragan was present to show his approval of the attention given Jarrett. Jarrett recalled the win as the first weekend the Wood Brothers used Robert Yates new cylinder heads in their Ford engines, which are still being used today. The 50 million AAA members saved $595 million dollars in 2006 with their AAA cards. Dale Jarrett came to Michigan on Thursday and played 18 holes of golf at Country Club of Jackson with Elliott and Hermie Sadler. All are claiming to have won. Jackson started to say the UPS Toyota hadn't had a lot of success this 2007 season in NASCAR Nextel Cup and then quickly changed to say NO success this year.
Expensive Trophy To Give Away Carl Edwards MISSION during the 2007 season is to win both the NASCAR Busch Series and Nextel Cup Championships. Edwards known for giving away his winning trophies, commented Friday at Michigan International Speedway that the NASCAR Nextel Cup Tiffany Championship trophy, would be a cool trophy to give away.
Not A Choir Boy Fans saw a side of smiling Kyle Petty this week, that few realized. When Petty broke his hand at Watkins Glen and honestly admitted he was mad and slammed his hand into a hauler cabinet door. This was a fluke in the past the cabinet has broken. Petty had surgery on Tuesday, to speed up the healing process.
No Regret Or Remorse Chad Knaus, crew chief for Jimmie Johnson's No. 48 Lowe's Chevrolet, returned to his duties at Michigan International Speedway, for the 3M Performance 400. Infineon Raceway is where NASCAR found a 1/8 inch difference in front fender shape and gave Knaus a six week suspension. In a press conference, on Friday at the track, Knaus stated, he had a contract with Hendrick Motorsports through 2010, and only the moment he heard NASCAR's sentence did he have any regret or remorse over the rules violation. He still feels he did nothing wrong. When asked if he had a time limit or desire to step into a management role, Knaus replied, he needed to make "A hell of a lot more money first". He used the missed track weekends during the suspension to reorganize and clean the fabrication shop. Johnson completely tore up two race cars during this period, Knaus was busy putting a new body and clip on one which is at Michigan this weekend. They also built a new car that will be taken to California Speedway.
Practice IS Race Weekend Sam Hornish Jr., doesn't have the time to practice or test his NASCAR Busch Series No. 12 Mobil 1 Dodge, all his learning is done race weekend. He realizes his progress is slow but feels more comfortable with each race, new track and as he meets other drivers. Hornish claims not to have made a decision on going to NASCAR full time in 2008. He has won the Indianapolis 500 in the IndyCar Series, since that was one BIG goal he has achieved, his decision is easier. One would believe the decision should be announced after the IndyCar season is over. Hornish is very solemn and serious during chats, but like Ted Musgrave can spin a tale making the wildest thing seem almost believable.
No Details Chevrolet announced Saturday at Michigan International Speedway they have signed an extension with Richard Childress Racing for 2008 and beyond. No details were given and no questions were answered regarding other Chevrolet teams. We do know that all Chevrolet team contracts expire in 2007.
Stevie Wonder Steve Wallace, driver of the No. 66 Jimmy John's Dodge, celebrated his Birthday August 18, 2007, turning 20 years of age. He is currently the youngest full time NASCAR Busch Series driver. Wallace started the CARFAX 250 in 27th position and finish 37th, not the day he wanted.
526 People Walk The third annual LAPS Walk held at Michigan International Speedway on Thursday raised over $60,000 from 526 participants. Lead by former NASCAR Cup drivers, Ernie Irvan, Jerry Nadeau and Bobby Allison, the event was a huge success. The funds will be split for the first time between The Brain Injury Association of Michigan and Ernie Irvan's non-profit organization Race2Safety. The 2007 focus was to provide support for American veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan suffering from Traumatic Brain Injury. Statistics show that two thirds of our military wounded have sustained TBIs. Start now - line up your pledges and make 2008 even bigger.
