A Few Post-Holiday NASCAR Notes

An Opinion

January 4, 2008

Now that the hectic holidays are behind us, it's time to start thinking NASCAR again - especially with Preseason Thunder testing at Daytona just days away.

To get you in a proper frame of mind, here are a few items of interest from the racing news front that you may have missed in all the hustle and bustle of the past few weeks:

  • I've been wondering whatever happened to that court date that Michael Waltrip was supposed to have after his single-vehicle accident back in April of last year. As you may recall, Waltrip rolled his SUV last year at around 2 a.m. on Saturday, April 7, and left the scene, walking a mile or so in his socks to his home. Police were unable to locate him for about 16 hours, but when they did, they charged Waltrip with reckless driving, failure to report an accident and speeding.

The latest new report I read said that Waltrip had an initial court appearance scheduled for May of last year, which was continued until June, but there seemed to be no followup after that.

At press time, the website of the North Caroline Court System shows Waltrip currently on the court calendar for two upcoming dates: Wednesday, February 13, for the reckless driving charge, and Tuesday, February 19, for a charge of speeding. I'm not sure whether Waltrip will need to be present in person on either of those dates, but the timing can't be considered good with the Bud Shootout on February 9 and the Daytona 500 on February 17.

Waltrip started off the 2007 season on a sour note due to the Daytona 500 fuel additive cheating scandal, and it appears that this year could begin with controversy for him as well.

  • Meanwhile, the media will no doubt be crawling all over the premiere of Dale Earnhardt Jr. in his new Hendrick Motorsports ride when he shows up for the second Daytona testing session, scheduled for January 14-17 at DIS. It will no doubt take some getting used to this year, seeing Junior all decked out in green or blue rather than what has always been his trademark Budweiser red - not to mention hanging around (dare I say drafting?) with new teammates Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson.

But Earnhardt will have plenty to tell the boys in the garage about how he spent his Christmas vacation - otherwise known as Marcos and Dale's Excellent Adventure. Earnhardt spent part of December in Australia as a guest of Tasmanian native Marcos Ambrose, who crossed over from the V8 Supercar Championship Series in Australia to NASCAR racing in 2006.

Among the sites the pair visited was the V8 Super School co-owned by Ambrose, though an article in Australia's Herald-Sun newspaper cheekily pointed out that Earnhardt "earns more money than the entire V8 Supercar field combined." Earnhardt also visited Melbourne, Sydney, and the Gold Coast, where he managed to find time to pose for photos with the girls from the Hooters Restaurant at Mermaid Beach on the Gold Coast.

  • On another note, if you missed veteran motorsports writer Bob Margolis' Christmas Eve article entitled "A Survivor's Story," it is a must-read and very true to its name. It's a candid recounting of Mr. Margolis' yearlong battle with not one, but two types of cancer. I think you will find it an emotional, eye-opening, and most importantly inspirational true story.

  • Lastly, isn't it funny how NASCAR seems to keep popping up just about everywhere? I was channel surfing last night and happened upon an episode of Family Feud from a few years back, with Sterling Marlin, Elliott Sadler and members of their teams playing against each other for charity.

In the bonus round, one of Marlin's crew was asked to "name something dogs do better than people." His answer: Pee.

    Only in NASCAR, right?
