Around The Track, Talladega Superspeedway Notebook
An Opinion

November 1, 2010

By Connie Felix

Ride Available

Kevin Harvick Inc. (KHI) has announced the signing of two multi-year sponsorship agreements with Rheem Manufacturing Company and Menards for the No.33 NASCAR Nationwide Series entry for the 2011 and 2012 seasons. The 2011 season, will include drivers Kevin Harvick, Paul Menard, Clint Bowyer and Austin Dillon behind the wheel. Still available and open for drivers are the rides at Road America, Iowa and Montreal for next season.

Undercover Boss

Fans of 'Undercover Boss' apparently weren't that impressed with last weekends show featuring NASCAR's Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer Steve Phelps, calling it nothing more than a commercial for the sport. It is true, Phelps was not shown working with actual NASCAR hired employees, though NASCAR does control the perk of free pit passes that crew members have available for family and friends at various race tracks.

Robby Gordon PR Stunt

"Thursday, October 28, 2010, Robby Gordon was caught driving an illegal NASCAR race car at a high rate of Speed on Highway 77 in Huntersville, NC that slowed down portions of the interstate due to the scene. Gordon was questioned by local authorities before being released." This wasn't seen on the news Thursday, as it was a stunt for his new NASCAR Sprint Cup sponsor 'SPEED Fuel Energy Supplement'.

Dozens of four pak containers of the SPEED Fuel Energy drink were placed in the media center at Talladega Superspeedway on Friday afternoon. Moments later track employees quickly removed them -- think it had every thing to do with this being the AMP Energy Juice 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup weekend race and no said product in sight.

Dogs In Garage

Crew members and personnel entering the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series garage area at Talladega Superspeedway, were advised to, "Place all bags on the ground and step back, please". Despite moans and groans, the process was quick and the explosive smelling dog found nothing. The handler commented, "Everyone thinks we are looking for drugs but that isn't our concern."

Sad October

  • NASCAR morns the passing of Ed Shull, a representative and consultant for Gatorade who passed away on October 25, 2010. He was a fixture at NASCAR Sprint Cup races and his warm presence and great smile will be missed by all.

  • Phyllis Donlavey, 85, passed away October 21, 2010, she was the wife of former NASCAR Sprint Cup driver and car owner "Junie" Donlavey. The family suggests anyone wanting to make contributions please do so to Victory Junction, 4500 Adam's Way, Randleman, N.C. 27317.

  • Jack Flowers, NASCAR Motorsports writer, best known for his column 'Say it with Flowers', passed away on October 11, 2010. Jack covered the sport for close to 40 years, a memorial service was held at Charlotte Motor Speedway over race weekend in the NASCAR garage.

  • NASCAR Vice President of Corporate Communications Jim Hunter, 71, passed away October 29, 2010 in Daytona Beach, Florida following a 12 month battle with cancer. His career in motorsports spanned six decades in journalism, public relations, track president at Darlington Raceway and recently heading up NASCAR's public relations team. Jim's presence in media centers and garages across the country will be greatly missed.

    Monkey's In NASCAR

It all started when Bruton Smith, Speedway Motorsports, Inc. Chairman/CES stated, "Even a trained monkey could sell race programs." Texas Motor Speedway President Eddie Gossage decided to see if Smith was correct, he has hired Miki and Rocky, trained capuchin monkeys, to sell the race programs throughout the AAA Texas 500 NASCAR triple-header race weekend, November 6-7, 2010.

    Rookie Campaign In 2011

Jeffry Earnhardt, fourth generation Earnhardt drove the No. 6 Firestop/FWI/Fuel Doctor Chevrolet in Saturday's NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, Mountain Dew 250 at Talladega Superspeedway. The young Earnhardt qualified in 24th position for Rick Ware Racing and was involved in the first accident ending his day on the 24th lap. Plans at this time are to race the 2011 season for Rookie of the Year in the NCWTS.

The team must have originally planned to run a Dodge, since NASCAR had it so listed on the starting line up.

    Unapproved And Illegal NCWTS Parts

Aric Almirola's No. 51 Billy Ballew Motorsports Toyota had an unapproved air cleaner box confiscation during NASCAR Camping World Truck Series inspection on Friday at Talladega Superspeedway.

    Unapproved and Illegal NSCS Parts

Michael McDowell's No. 46 Whitney's Collision Centers Chevrolet, running in the NASCAR Sprint Cup, AMP Energy Juice 500 had two lower a-arms confiscated at Talladega Superspeedway during Friday's inspection. The parts were tagged, 'added car weight in unapproved place and form'. Indeed someone had too much time on their hands for they apparently hollowed out the a-arms and filled them with very small ball bearings. I've read that the added weight would improve handling as it lowered the car's center of gravity.

    Personal Memorabilia Auctioned

Carl Edwards NASCAR Sprint Cup driver has teamed up with his sponsor Copart a leading online vehicle auction company, to sell Edwards’ personal memorabilia beginning October 25, 2010 till November 15, 2010. Copart will help Edwards auction off items including his Harley Davidson motorcycle that he won at Road America, a race-used firesuit, the hood of his No. 60 Copart Ford raced in Nashville and an autographed pit crew uniform. Edwards intends to donate all proceeds to Back2Back Ministries’ orphan care program based in Monterrey, Mexico. Saturday afternoon the bid on the motorcycle was at $5,600.

    Free Talladega Concerts

Friday Performance by: Colt Ford a walking, talking 300-pound celebration of country music and country living. His songs pay tribute to the people, pastimes and attitudes that define a lifestyle embraced from Texas to Wisconsin, from Florida to Washington State and a lot of places in between.

Saturday: Talladega Superspeedway race fans enjoyed a full concert Saturday evening by national recording artist and 2003 American Idol finalist Josh Gracin. The concert was immediately following the Grand Magnolias' performance located in the Captain’s Quarters, the grass area between Eastaboga and Talladega Blvd in the infield.

    Sound & Speed Discontinued

Each January for the past five years, fans of NASCAR racing and country music descended upon downtown Nashville for a unique and increasingly popular event known as Sound & Speed, which featured performances, autograph and storytelling sessions, displays and other opportunities to get up-close-and-personal with their favorite racecar drivers and country music artists. Victory Junction Gang Camp benefited from the charity event but with economic conditions and lingering effects of last spring’s floods that devastated many residential neighborhoods in Nashville including areas downtown the event was cancelled.

    Private Campgrounds Hurting

Private campgrounds surrounding Talladega Superspeedway this race weekend had an obvious drop in campers. Some on Speedway Boulevard looked to have less than 50% of the normal campers, while others much less. The popular Wazoo Campground that takes reservations online only was closed completely. Off the main road campgrounds had from five to fifteen campers in lieu of the normal hundred each. The track has added more free camping and many race fans have given up electricity and water for the savings.

    Sprint Cup Debut

Trevor Bayne, 19, hopes to make his NASCAR Sprint Cup debut at Texas Motor Speedway next weekend when he attempts to qualify for the Texas 500 race. Bayne will add his name to the great list of drivers who have driven the No. 21 Wood Brothers Ford.
