Team Recycles Sneakers To Help Others

Roush Yates begins a quest, between May 4th and May 18th, to gather 1,000 pair of gently used sneakers in an effort to raise funds for local Mooresville families with children fighting cancer. Shoes must be of the gently used variety, though they may contain holes no larger than a dime, must have the soles and backs intact, and must include the laces. Race Fans & residents in the area are encouraged to drop shoes at Roush Yates Performance Products during regular business hours from 7am to 6pm Monday through Friday or 9am to 1pm on Saturdays at 122 Knob Hill Road in Mooresville, NC.

Green Sneakers will pay Roush Yates up to $.50 a pound for the shoes. With an average pair of shoes weighing in at about 2 pounds, that’s roughly $1 a pair. Eventually the shoes go to a sorting facility where Green Sneakers staff process the collection, keeping them from the local landfill, and making them ready for distribution to other people in need.

Sam Bass Guitar Designed Trophy In High Demand

When Nashville Superspeedway, the 1.33 mile concrete oval track located in Gladeville, Tennessee closed its gates in 2011, the beautiful and unique Gibson Guitar trophy came to a temporary end. Artist Sam Bass designed 45 guitars for the track over a ten year period and decided to give it a year before moving the tradition elsewhere. At least ten tracks immediately stepped up wanting the guitar trophy for their NASCAR races. Time for a decision will come sooner than race fans like and still no rumor as to what might happen to Nashville Superspeedway. Bristol Motor Speedway would be the obvious choice since that is truly where Country Music started and Gibson is located in Tennessee.

Humpy Wheeler & Bruton Smith At It Again

Humpy Wheeler is taking offense that his boss of 33 years at Charlotte Motor Speedway, Bruton Smith, appeared to claim responsibility this past week for lights at the 1.5 mile NASCAR race track. Wheeler claims the idea was 100% his. The feud started when Wheeler felt he was forced out of his job several years before he was ready to retire.

Little E Discusses Being In The Garage As A Kid

Dale Earnhardt Jr. was asked during a Saturday morning press conference at Talladega Superspeedway, when he realized the race fans at Talladega were passionate for the Earnhardt name,

“I probably didn’t really witness it until I was a driver and Dad (Dale Earnhardt, Sr.) won that one race that they talk about where he came from 18th to win with three laps to go. I don’t really remember anything specific about that moment. When I was a kid, I wasn’t really concerned with how famous Dad was or the reaction from the fans. I was just running around the garage having fun with my buddies. I was in awe about how many brand new spark plugs they would leave laying around the garage. Brand new bottles of brake cleaner and glass cleaner just discarded. Because, when the race started, they didn’t leave their crash carts. They didn’t have crash carts back then. You had one tool box and you took it to the pits, so when the race was going on, the garage was completely empty of everything. There was nothing there. They had cleaned it up, put everything away and took everything they needed to the pits. What they would leave behind would be brand-new spark plugs and brand-new cans of this, that and the other. All kinds of brand new stuff just laying around. Me and my buddies would box it up or carry it over to Jimmy Means’ truck so they could take it home. Like they needed it. I don’t even know if Jimmy cared, but we thought we were doing something cool. That was all we did; we did that, and begged people to let us wax their race cars and whatever we could get ourselves in to.”
