By Connie Felix

Brothers Have Same Race Owner

Ryan Truex, 18, is the younger brother of two-time NASCAR Nationwide Series champion Martin Truex Jr. who drives No. 56 NAPA Auto Parts Toyota for Michael Waltrip Racing in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. Ryan will race in six NASCAR Nationwide Series races in 2010 in addition to running the full 10-race K&N Filters Pro Series East schedule in defense of his 2009 championship title. His Nationwide series debut is July 17 at Gateway Speedway, followed by Michigan, Richmond, Kansas, the fall Charlotte race and Homestead-Miami Speedway. MWR will be pursuing sponsorship support for the full 2011 season NASCAR Nationwide Series effort.

Rumor Has It

NASCAR Officials removed the weekend Martinsville Speedway credentials from a photographer, on Saturday, following the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, Kroger 250 race. Fellow photographers are saying she went over the wall earlier than what Officials deemed safe.

Dash 4 Cash

Nashville Superspeedway is the first of four NASCAR Nationwide Series events, where race winners are eligible for a $25,000 cash bonus should they qualify. NASCAR Sprint Cup drivers are eligible only if they compete in every NNS event in the 2010 season. Dash 4 Cash schedule includes Nashville Superspeedway April 3, Kentucky Motor Speedway June 12, Iowa Speedway July 31 and Texas Motor Speedway November 6. An additional $75,000 year end bonus will be awarded to any NNS only driver with the highest number of cumulative points from these four races. Any NASCAR driver who competes in more than seven NASCAR Sprint Cup races during the season is not eligible for year end bonus.

5,000 Raffle Tickets At $100 Each

Four-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Jeff Gordon announced on Trackside on SPEED the launch of the 2010 Corvette raffle to benefit The Jeff Gordon Foundation. One lucky individual will drive home in Gordon’s personal 2009 Chevrolet Z06 Corvette following the November 7th NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Texas Motor Speedway. Last year’s winning ticket was one of three purchased by winner Richard Sivulich while 2007 winner Robert Marian purchased a single ticket. The 2006 winner Norma Callis, who is 75 years old, does not even have a driver’s license, although her husband is more than happy to drive the pair around in their Corvette convertible. This year’s winning raffle ticket will be announced live on Trackside on SPEED Friday, October 8, 2010.

Speed Week 2010

NHRA drag racer Doug Herbert and NASCAR championship winning Crew Chief Ray Evernham have completed their unlimited streamliner, and plan to run at the Bonneville Salt Flats during Speed Week 2010, August 14-18th. This venture was started in 2008, by July 2009 they had completed construction of the frame. The car will be tested at the Laurinburg-Maxton airfield, an abandoned airstrip in Maxton, N. C., before going to Bonneville. Check out Land Speed Record Project for more information.

Taylor Gibbs Finish Line Festival

J.D. Gibbs' youngest son Taylor, 5, will finish treatments for leukemia in April, and his family wanted to say thanks to the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the Levine's Children's Hospital in Charlotte. Taylor's Finish Line Festival will be held May 23, 2010, at the Z Max Drag Strip at Charlotte Motor Speedway, the day after the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race. Taylor was diagnosed with leukemia three years ago. "Taylor's treatment, Lord willing, ends this spring," Gibbs said. The gates will open at 2:30 and the carnival attractions will operate until 7:30. The festival will include activities for children and adults, with more than 40 carnival rides and games, inflatable's, hot air balloons, BMX and skateboard exhibitions, appearances by NASCAR drivers and a live concert by Grammy Award-winning artist Toby Mac. All the money from ticket sales will be donated to the two charities.

Stewart-Haas Tidbits

  • The Stewart-Haas Racing team hired several new people for Ryan Newman's pit crew, times in the shop have improved, have we seen it at the track?

  • New employees were also hired for the engineering and fabrication shops.

  • It is very possible Stewart-Haas Racing will expand to a third team in 2011, all depending on sponsorship.

  • Tony Stewart claims Stewart-Haas Racing has taken him from the me-me-me mode of thought.

  • Stewart's readily admits his personal Motto is, "It is easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission"

  • Kristy Newman supposedly gives Stewart quarterly reviews making sure he knows what his priorities should be.

  • Tony Stewart's organizational accomplishment goal would be to win Championships.

  • On the personal side Stewart would like to win the Daytona 500, Las Vegas and Darlington.

  • Stewart-Haas Racing leases engines from Hendricks Motorsports, and are allowed to adjust or change the headers, intake, carburetor, tailpipe and any physical work that they find necessary.

  • Stewart has no interest in preparing their own engines, for all the obvious reasons plus it would take years to be comparable.

    Shouting Match

Johnny Sauter was livid following the Saturday Martinsville Speedway, NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, Kroger 250 race. With 20 laps remaining Ron Hornaday, Jr. got the nose of his No. 33 truck under the No. 13 sending Sauter up the race track and into the path of Mike Skinner. To the credit of NASCAR Officials, they allowed the two drivers to vent following the race. You could not hear the exchange, but plenty of arm movement was involved. Afterward Sauter bit his lip for cameras and tried to concentrate on his lovely wife, new baby and sponsors.

    Governor Disrespected By Media Member

Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell was at Martinsville Speedway on Sunday for the NASCAR Sprint Cup drivers meeting. The Governor was not staying for the race, however his wife Maureen and four of their 5 children did stay until the Goody's Fast Relief 500 was rescheduled due to rain.

Time for one questions and it was, "Hey Gov do you want to do your Schwarzenegger impression." Hey Gov, how disrespectful Mike, not only to the Governor of Virginia and NASCAR but everyone in attendance.

    Craven Debut

Ricky Craven, who won races in all three of NASCAR’s top series during his driving career and has been a studio analyst for ESPN for more than two years, will make his debut in the broadcast booth as an analyst, at Nashville Superspeedway for the NASCAR Nationwide Series race Easter weekend. Craven joins lap-by-lap announcer Marty Reid and 1999 NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Dale Jarrett to call the race. Pit reporters will be Dave Burns, Jamie Little, Dr. Jerry Punch and Vince Welch. Two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion crew chief Tim Brewer will report from the ESPN Craftsman Tech Garage

Rose will return to NASCAR after being suspended in 2003 for violating NASCAR's substance abuse policy. Seven years later Rose is drug-free and ready to get back behind the wheel and attempt to gain the trust and support of fans and his peers in the garage.
