Martinsville Speedway Notebook ~ Sunday
An Opinion

March 30, 2009

By Connie Felix

Missing Pendulum

Jeff Burton admitted this weekend, he has lost the pendulum for one of the two Martinsville Speedway Grandfather clocks he has earned. The trophies were for winning the September 1990 NASCAR Nationwide Series Race and Fall, 1997 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Race. Burton realizes losing a pendulum that size is difficult but never the less it is lost. Several years ago Ricky Rudd stated, he no longer has the original track brick, given to him when he won the 1997 Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. Like Burton, Rudd has no idea what happened to it.

Flyover's Will End

Martinsville Speedway worked on a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, 'Flyover' for six months, only two weeks before this Spring NASCAR weekend was it approved and three T-38's, out of Laughlin Air Force Base, Wichita, Kansas appeared at the delight of race fans. The military has stated they would only attend 40 NASCAR races in 2009 and intend cutting them out completely in 2010. Race fans have come to expect the flyovers, but did you know it cost $30,000 per plane. NASCAR, nor the tracks pay for this entertainment, the military uses it as a recruiting tool and it comes out of our taxpayer dollars.

Odds & Ends

  • Kevin Harvick signed an extension to his NASCAR Sprint Cup contract with Richard Childress Racing in 2007 running him through the 2010 season.

  • Jeff Gordon purchased a motorhome for $2.1 million in November 2007. Wonder how much, Jimmie Johnson is spending on the new one he has ordered?

  • The Clint Bowyer episode of "The Biggest Loser" that aired March 24th was taped in January.

  • Rockingham Speedway has tried to make a duplicate Martinsville track in it's "Little Rockingham", but the drivers all say it isn't the same.

  • Kyle Busch stated in his opinion, the closest track to Martinsville Speedway is the Orange Show Speedway in San Bernardino, California which is only a quarter mile.

  • Jimmie Johnson, has stayed with business agent, Alan Miller who is awaiting a Florida verdict in the Helio Castroneves federal tax case. We should know in another week how that decision works out.

  • Jeff Gordon has won seven Grandfather clocks from Martinsville Speedway. He stated they were with "Rick Hendrick, myself, Ray Evernham, Steve Letarte, Robbie Loomis and Brian Whitesell". That accounts for six!

  • Timothy Peters No. 17, Hayes Iron & Metals/Strutmasters com Toyota, NASCAR Camping World Truck, lost a spring rubber as he left pit road for his qualifying run at Martinsville Speedway. He qualified 10th.

    The Blount Report

"The Blount Report: NASCAR's Most Overrated and Underrated Drivers, Cars, Teams, and Tracks," by Terry Blount is hardcover and in bookstores now. The Author wants you to know, no one is overrated if he is willing to strap into a race car and risk his life at 200 mph. These short stories will affirm what race fans have known all along but the reasons may be different.

    Then Tony Said To Junior

Then Tony Said to Junior: The Best NASCAR Stories Ever Told by Mike Hembree, another great Triumph Book. Included comes a 48 minute interview CD with NASCAR's own Bobby Allison and Buz McKim, NASCAR Hall of Fame Historian. A humorous book full of unusual moments and stories, some of which even a steadfast race fan hasn't heard. This book like the other is full of short stories of 1 page, excellent if you don't have the time or patience for a long read.

    USARacing Starts April 4, 2009

The past ten years some of the best short tracking racing could be found in the USAR Hooters Pro Cup Series. Hooters departed at the end of the 2008 season with the future of the series a mystery. Four new owners, Jack McNelly, Chip Lofton, and Gary Kale joined with Larry Camp in late December 2008 and have accomplished miracles in a short time. Big sponsorship is in the works for 2010, but with the season opener April 4th at Concord Speedway in Concord, North Carolina, they promise with or without a title sponsor a full 2009 season of USARacing. Where else can you get 250 laps of racing for $20.00 a ticket and kids under 10 get in free.

    $3,000 Campsite

Twenty motorhomes purchased front row camping spots overlooking Martinsville Speedway on the back stretch. Not a space was empty, even at the $3,000 per season price, good for all track events

Kyle A Challenge On/Off The Track?

Friday's Martinsville Speedway media press conference with Kyle and Kurt Busch found both being asked about sibling rivalry. A Busch brother has won 3 out of the last five NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races going into Martinsville Speedway weekend. Kurt has the following to say: "It was funny, just being seven years apart, I felt like I never had a challenge from him. Now, I can’t say that because he’s definitely a challenge on and off the track. I would say the way we raced our race cars…I had my dad teaching me and my dad taught Kyle; as much as my dad gave to me in my racing career early on, I just felt obligated to help him (Kyle). He’s my little brother. I want him to be good and I want him to do things right on the race track as far as how to set them up and race them. I tried to teach him as much as I could. And every time I moved on to another racing division, it seemed like he jumped in that car within a year or two behind me. It worked out where I was always a few divisions ahead or a division ahead and we didn’t’ race against each other much until we got to this (NASCAR Sprint) Cup level. It’s been fun now to race each other and almost pretend like we’re back when we were kids racing go-karts in the parking lot.”

    A Golden Voice

Country music superstar, author, philanthropist and actor, Trace Adkins was the Grand Marshal and Honorary Starter for Sunday's, Goody's Fast Pain Relief 500, NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Race at Martinsville Speedway. Truly a working man, Adkins may be known for his appearances on the 2008 reality series, "The Celebrity Apprentice", The Glenn Beck Program or his charity work with the Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network (FAAN). His newest album, Trace Adkins "X" (Ten), offers up a little bit of everything for his fans.

    Martinsville Illegal Parts And Pieces

No illegal parts or pieces were confiscated from the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race cars this weekend at Martinsville Speedway. A NASCAR official stated, "Everything's Good".

    A Legend

If you haven't seen Richard Petty, walk through a race track, you are definitely missing a sight you won't soon forget. He is tall, thin, straight as a board, absolutely like watching royalty in boots, blue jeans, long black jacket and signature cowboy hat. As often as I've seen "The King" it is still an awesome sight. A surprised came when Petty passed by a fan that asked for an autograph, but then I've been disappointed in most of the drivers at one time or another.

    Crowd Comes Alive

Driver introductions for the Goody's Fast Pain Relief 500, NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, at Martinsville Speedway was going along at a sobering pace until Dale Earnhardt Jr. was introduced. The crowd came alive with equal cheers and boo's for Dale Jr. Kyle Busch and Jeff Gordon re-woke the race fans again, with all in attendance having a point of view to express.

    Bristol Exception

This is in answer to your questions regarding the Goodyear tires at short track, Bristol Motor Speedway. According to Goodyear, for the past 10 years the inner liners have been ran on both right side tires. Prior to that, it was only the right front tire. So it isn't completely true, NASCAR ovals greater than one-mile in length are the only tracks, teams are required to run inner liners.
