Martinsville Speedway Notebook ~ Saturday
An Opinion

March 28, 2010

By Connie Felix

Surgery Day After Martinsville

Denny Hamlin will have surgery on his damaged knee in Charlotte at OrthoCarolina by Dr. Patrick Connor after the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, Goody's Fast Pain Relief 500 at Martinsville Speedway. With a off-week, before the Phoenix International Raceway race weekend, Denny feels he will be able to start that race. Casey Mears will be on stand-by should a replacement driver be necessary for practice or to complete any of the upcoming races. According to NASCAR drug policies, no pain medicine will be available for the young driver.

Bill France Jr. - The Man Who Made NASCAR

Triumph Books will release, Monday March 29, 2010 in hardcover, 'Bill France Jr. - The Man Who Made NASCAR' written by NASCAR's own H. A. Branham, with a foreword by Tom Brokaw. Excerpts from the 207 page book can be found on Facebook. Surprisingly this is the first book on Bill France Jr. since his passing. The author worked on the book for over a year and he promises this isn't the typical corporate/NASCAR approved book. You will find an easy Index at the back, making it great for reference.

Martinsville Out - Nashville In

Kyle Busch opted out of driving his No. 18 KBM NASCAR Camping World Truck at Martinsville Speedway in the Kroger 250, because of the hectic practice and qualifying schedule between the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and the trucks. Kyle decided this week to run his truck at Nashville Superspeedway when a sponsor stepped up to finance his efforts. The sponsor will be announced on Tuesday after final paperwork is completed.

Fourth Question

It was the 4th question, before Bad Tony (Stewart) appeared, during the Friday Infield Media conference at Martinsville Superspeedway. Two additional times it happened, but Stewart quickly followed up with a proper answer. It seemed as if Stewart and NASCAR had a previous conversation, by the eye contact between the driver and NASCAR media liaison Kerry Tharp. In Stewart's defense, he had just came from a practice incident with Travis Kvapil and was mad. What made it worse was the fact Kvapil thought it was no big deal.

  • Have you noticed Haas Automation has been on the side of Ryan Newman's No. 39 Chevrolet a lot lately. Ownership isn't is glorious.

    Rotors Glowing Red

Martinsville Speedway, is a half mile racetrack shaped like a paperclip with 800 foot long straight-aways, tight turns and the second most difficult track on the NASCAR Sprint Cup schedule, behind Watkins Glen, when it comes to brakes. The drivers are on the brakes 35% of the time trying to slow down a 3400 lb car running 125-130 mph into the corners. The brake pad wear after running one 500-lap race (263 miles) race at Martinsville Speedway on a NASCAR Sprint Cup car would be equivalent to traveling 80,000 miles in your personal vehicle. The brake pads start the race at 1.25 inch thickness and will finish the race at approximately 1/2 " thick. On a normal road car the brakes would wear 304 times less than the brake pads used during the Goody's Fast Pain Relief 500, NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Martinsville Speedway.

    2 Cents Adds Up

Michigan International Speedway has made a deal with TerraCycle, who will buy the tracks paper and plastic garbage items for 2 cents a piece, funds will go to the MIS Cares charity. Calling it upcycle, which is a step up from recycling, TerraCycle will take Drink pouches, potato chip bags, candy bar wrappers, cookie wrappers, energy bar wrappers, pens, markers and highlighters, turning it into every day products such as laptop cases, flower pots, pencil bags and toys.

    NNS Drivers Submit Creations

BUBBA Burgers, provided lunch for the media Friday at Martinsville Speedway and announced the "Signature BUBBA burger" contest for all NASCAR Nationwide Series drivers. The driver who invents the tastiest signature creation will win a BUBBA burger lunch for his entire team and will be recognized during pre-race ceremonies prior to the BUBBA burger 250 NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Richmond International Raceway on Friday night, April 30. Drivers submitting creations early will ensure their inclusion on www.rir.com, where fans will vote prior to Monday, April 26th, to determine the most appealing burger.

    Race Fan Arranges Flyover

Goody's Fast Pain Relief 500 at Martinsville Speedway will have F-18 Super Hornets provide the flyover. They are from one of the Navy's oldest and most decorated squadrons, Strike Fighter Squadron Three One based at Oceana Naval Air Station near Norfolk, VA has spent the past eight months deployment aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt. The flyover was made possible Thanks to a retiring pilot and longtime Martinsville Speedway fan.

    Roaming Legends

Fans are having quite a thrill this weekend at Martinsville Speedway, with seven racing legends roaming the property. The entire group, Harry Gant, Buddy Baker, Richard Petty, Ned Jarrett, Junior Johnson, Bobby Allison and Donnie Allison signed autographs Saturday following the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, Kroger 250 race and again they were available Sunday morning. Buddy Baker is the Grand Marshall for Sunday's, NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, Goody's Fast Pain Relief 500 at Martinsville Speedway. Harry Gant will be the Honorary Starter for the same race.

    Sleep Study

Tony Stewart stated in a previous interview, he had a Sleep Study performed during the off season. Over the years he has mentioned being a restless sleeper, indeed the study found Stewart has 30 minutes of rem sleep per night. Far less than what is normal.

    History Of Speedway Children's Charities

Bruton Smith, Chairman of Speedway Motorsports and Sonic Automotive founded Speedway Children's Charities, as a memoriam and legacy to his son, Bruton Cameron Smith, who passed away at a very young age. Smith became passionate about wanting to help children in need. Throughout the years SCC has grown to funding thousands of organizations nationwide that help children directly with everything from educational support to the basic need of a coat or a simple meal.
