NASCAR Gets Award For Listening

The fans are making their voices heard. NASCAR is listening. And experts in the field of social media now rank NASCAR No. 1. When NASCAR formed a Fan Council for fan input and advice on important topics related to the sport, the last thing anyone expected was an award – let alone two awards. But in recent weeks, this unique “advisory board” of the sport’s most avid fans has earned national acclaim by winning the Forrester Groundswell Award in the Business-to-Consumer Listening category and the Vision Critical 2009 Panel of the Year Award.

“The outside attention is flattering, but we’re most happy about the inflow of smart and passionate input from a group of our most dedicated fans,” said Brian France, chairman and CEO of NASCAR. “NASCAR fans are known to be vocal about the sport they love. They want to be heard, and we want to hear them. The NASCAR Fan Council is turning out to be an extremely valuable platform that enables NASCAR to consider fan feedback in key decisions about the direction of the sport.”

NASCAR introduced the NASCAR Fan Council in 2008 to gain a better understanding of its fan base. In 2009, regular consultations with the council, an online community of 12,000 avid NASCAR fans, resulted in two important changes to the sport:

Double File Restarts, Shootout Style: When fan sentiment ran high for a new restart format – in which the leaders line up side-by-side following cautions to restart the race – NASCAR picked up the comments, validated and initiated a new double-file restart rule, to overwhelmingly positive reviews.

Earlier and consistent TV start times: When fans voiced their opinions about event start times, NASCAR listened and quantified sentiment, resulting in earlier and more uniform start times for NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races in 2010.

Every time NASCAR reaches out to the Fan Council for input, the first question asked is, “Is there anything on your mind you’d like to share with us about NASCAR?” This is an opportunity for these fans to share their thoughts with NASCAR leadership amongst other questions asked of the members.

“Every year the quality of business social applications goes up, and marketers have become more sophisticated,” said Josh Bernoff, senior vice president, Idea Development at Forrester and co-author of Groundswell. “This year’s award winners stood out in a very competitive field; all of them demonstrate not just creative use of social technologies, but impressive, measurable results.”

Jennifer Reid, Vision Critical’s senior vice president of strategy and a judge for the Panel of the Year Award, said online panels like the NASCAR Fan Council give people a true voice in the decisions being made by large organizations.

“Online panels add social media and community engagement to research in a way that really provides a channel for consumers to voice their ideas and opinions,” Reid said. “The NASCAR Fan Council empowers fans in a powerful way that gives them a true voice in the direction of the sport.”

“The Fan Council has created a shift in company culture as it relates to consumer research with nearly all departments embracing insights from our most avid fans,” said Brian Moyer, NASCAR’s managing director of market and media research. “It’s an honor to be considered a leading brand as it relates to listening.”

  • About the Forrester Groundswell Awards
The Forrester Groundswell Awards recognize excellence in achieving business and organizational goals with social technology applications. The awards program was developed to support and recognize the principles outlined in the Forrester Research book Groundswell: Winning In A World Transformed By Social Technologies (Harvard Business Press, 2008).

This year, there were more than 140 entries to the Forrester Groundswell Awards. Winners were chosen in Business-to-Business (B2B) and Business-to-Consumer (B2C) divisions across a number of categories – Listening, Talking, Energizing, Supporting, and Embracing – that represent the strategic goals that Forrester Research advises organizations to consider when using social technologies to interact with their customers. Additional winners were selected in a special Employee and Non-Profit division to recognize outstanding social applications in management and social impact.

This weekend at Texas Motor Speedway, fans will get a chance to ‘Start Something’ -- at an off-road test course where fans can drive brand-new Toyota vehicles on a challenging man-made course. Participants will be able to test their driving skills as they attempt to guide a Tundra, Sequoia, Tacoma or the all-new fifth generation Toyota 4Runner through this course – consisting of dirt hills, tight corners and other challenging obstacles. The ‘Start Something’ course will be located across from the ‘Nationwide Tower,’ adjacent to the hospitality village in the VIP/PSL parking lot.

Donnie Wingo Named Best Crew Chief

Donnie Wingo, crew chief for the No. 26 IRWIN MARATHON Ford Fusion driven by Jamie McMurray, has been named the WYPALL Wipers Crew Chief of the Race following Sunday's AMP Energy 500 at Talladega Superspeedway.

McMurray and Wingo's strategy was to lay low for the first half of the race, in an effort to avoid any early race incidents and to log laps. Mid-way through the race as McMurray was stuck in the middle of the pack, pit strategy came into play in order to move further up in the field.

After the caution flag flew on lap 141 with McMurray running eighth, it was time to make a change, vaulting to the lead on lap 152.

The Wingo-led team fought to maintain their track position in the top three for the next 30 laps and regained first on lap 181. The fifth caution of the day fell on lap 184, leaving Wingo to worry about fuel mileage with only a few laps remaining. McMurray kept the lead and stretched the fuel mileage to claim his third career triumph.

"Donnie had a great plan and ran great strategy," said Jeff Hammond, WYPALL Wipers spokesperson and SPEED/FOX television analyst. "This was a race of opportunity and this team seized every moment."

This is the first time Wingo has been named the WYPALL* Wipers Crew Chief of the Race in the 2010 season-long program. Chad Knaus is tied for the lead with Darian Grubb as the WYPALL* Wipers Crew Chief the Race, with four wins and both are in contention to become the WYPALL* Wipers Crew Chief of the Year. Not far behind are Drew Blickensderfer, Steve Letarte and Alan Gustafson, all with three wins.

  • WYPALL* Wipers Crew Chief Results
Bob Osborne, crew chief for the No. 99 Aflac Ford and driver Carl Edwards, led early in the race, but was caught up in the late race multi-car accident causing them to fall back in the field, finishing in 14th. Todd Berrier began his tenure as the crew chief for Jeff Burton and the No. 31 CAT team, with a fifth place effort after running in the top 10 most of the day. WYPALL Wipers' support the men behind the machines and you can find out more about Todd and Bob at http://www.wypall.com/Bios.asp.

  • WYPALL* Wipers Crew Chief Team
Osborne, Berrier, and Hammond, along with representatives from the WYPALL Wipers brand, all serve as the panel for the WYPALL Wipers Crew Chief Challenge and vote for the weekly crew chief winners. In addition to the $1,000 check, the winning crew chief will receive signage to announce the win on their pit box the following week. The crew chief with the most weekly wins will be honored as the WYPALL Wipers Crew Chief of the Year and will be presented a $20,000 check at the season finale in Homestead, Fla.

Each week through Homestead, Hammond will interview the WYPALL Wipers Crew Chief of the Race from the prior race during Trackside Live on SPEED every Friday evening. Former winners of the WYPALL Wipers Crew Chief Challenge include Tony Eury, Sr. (Dale Earnhardt, Jr.), Robbie Reiser (Matt Kenseth), Doug Richert (Greg Biffle), Mike Ford (Denny Hamlin) and Chad Knaus (Jimmie Johnson).

    Hillin To Race At Texas

Retirement is never easy for a race car driver but in 2000, after 18 years of racing, Bobby Hillin, Jr. decided it was time to move on. Question was —- what now?

Applying the ambition and drive he had from success in racing at a very young age, Hillin founded T-Rex Companies with just one truck and a prayer. Today, he overseas two companies— Texas ReExcavation, L.C., a non-destructive sub-surface vacuum excavation company, and T-Rex Engineering & Construction, L.C., a subsea design and fabrication concern that caters to the offshore oil & gas industry. This weekend marks the return of what many have since called the “Original Young Gun” to Texas Motor Speedway.

In some respects, Hillin paved the way for younger drivers to enter the sport.

“When I started my NASCAR career, there weren’t many open arms on the circuit for a young driver -- especially after winning a big Cup race early in my career,” said Hillin, winner of the 1986 Talladega 500, was at the time the youngest NASCAR winner ever on a superspeedway. “Now, young drivers are much more accepted and the norm in racing,” he said.

T-Rex had already planned on entertaining clients during Texas race week which begins November 6.

“It has always been hard for me to be at the track and not race,” Hillin stated. “So when we had the opportunity to sponsor the No. 81 car and I could drive, well -- we jumped on it. For me, this is equivalent of going back and playing in a high school football game, and I know so many men can relate to that!”

So the build up and excitement begins for T-Rex and their clients.

“We have built T-Rex Companies based on the competitive environment I grew up with in my career. The components for success are very similar: Safety, Quality and Teamwork are three tenets we use to challenge each other on a daily basis,” stated Hillin.

And now, Hillin gets to promote the companies by competing and racing again.

“This unique opportunity brings an extra dose of energy and buzz to our employees and clients,” beamed Hillin. “We are all very excited to participate in the O’Reilly Challenge Nationwide Series Race November 7.”

    Allmendinger In A Ford

AJ Allmendinger will make his debut in a Ford this weekend at Texas Motor Speedway, and the Richard Petty Motorsports driver will compete in Fords for the remaining three NASCAR Sprint Cup races this year as the organization prepares for a planned merger with Yates Racing and a move to the manufacturer in 2010.

Allmendinger's No. 44 entry will carry the familiar Petty paint scheme of blue and red for the remainder of the season, beginning with this weekend's NASCAR Sprint Cup Dickies 500. He will be the organization's only driver in Fords for the remainder of the season.(scenedaily.com)
