Jamie McMurray Wins At Talladega

Jamie McMurray picked up his third career victory in a wild finish at Talladega Superspeedway on Sunday. The race was pretty much accident free until Ryan Newman wrecked with five laps to go. Newman got together with teammate Tony Stewart and Newman's car turned upside down, sliding on its roof, hitting the outside wall and bringing out the red flag. Then on the green-white-checkers restart, John Andretti ran out of fuel and that extended the race three more laps. At that point more and more cars began running out of gas so that not only extended the number of laps, it also jumbled up the field. With the green flag in the air and the cars coming to the white flag lap, someone ran into Kurt Busch -- sending him hard into the inside wall and then all-heck broke loose. The result was a 13 car pileup. Mark Martin was upside down and rolling. Other Chase contenders Brian Vickers, Jeff Gordon and Juan Pablo Montoya were also involved. Points leader Jimmie Johnson, who had been riding around near the back of the pack all race, finished in the sixth position.

“I saw the guys wreck behind me and I didn’t know if you had to take the white in order for (the win), I wasn’t real sure what the rules were, and the 9 (Kahne) went to the outside because he saw the same issue, but I just moved up and kind of tried to block him," said McMurray. "As soon as I crossed the start-finish line I shut the engine off -- pushed the clutch in and coasted around as far as I could. What an exciting day. It’s been a long time since I’ve won and I want to assure every fan out there that I appreciate this as much as anybody, so thanks to all my fans who have stuck with me. The bump drafting, it happened at the end anyway, but it’s good that the guys are able to get off of you. When you’re the guy that’s actually doing the bump drafting, you don’t want to get off because the cars have so much grip and the track has so much grip that you don’t really have to get off of them, so it’s a little bit different than Daytona. And then I couldn’t believe the single-file that we had. When I was leading that deal at the end I knew that there would be an inside row that would come up and challenge us, so it was very exciting for me there.”

The triumph was McMurray’s second with car owner Jack Roush and Ford, and his first at Talladega. McMurray’s win was his second restrictor plate win, his other one coming at Daytona in July of 2007. Kasey Kahne held onto the second spot and rookie Joey Logano was third. Greg Biffle finished fourth followed by Jeff Burton, Jimmie Johnson, Michael Waltrip, Brad Keselowski, Elliott Sadler and Bobby Labonte to round out the top ten. The Sprint Cup Series moves to Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth, Texas next Sunday, November 8th, for the Dickies 500, the eighth race in the Chase for the Championship. The race will also be broadcast live on PRN Radio and SIRIUS Satellite Radio Channel 128.

Talladega: Renovation and Lower Prices

Immediately following the Nov.1 AMP Energy 500, construction crews will descend on Talladega Superspeedway and begin work on a two-phase $13-million grandstand renovation project. More than half of the stadium’s grandstand will be replaced with larger seats and wider aisles in time for the April 25, 2010 Aaron’s 499. The remaining seats will be replaced in time for the Oct. 31, 2010 AMP Energy 500.

Accompanying the renovations is a new pricing structure for many Talladega seat locations. Single-day seats in the Gadsden, Lincoln, Anniston and Talladega Towers have been reduced to $95 from $120. Two-day tickets in the Allison Grandstands, one of the best values in all of motorsports, have been further reduced to $49 from $60. Race fans will also find new lower prices on certain infield camping locations by visiting (www.talladegasuperspeedway.com\camping).

Phase One of the renovation project will span from the Gadsden grandstands in Turn Four through section C of the OV Hill South grandstands in the Tri-oval. New 21-inch seats with armrests and cupholders will replace the current 17-inch seats and seat aisles will also be widened to 48 inches from 36.

“This will be a fantastic upgrade for our frontstretch grandstand customers,” said Talladega Superspeedway President Rick Humphrey. “The new seats are much more comfortable and the wider aisles will be easier to get in and out of during trips to the concession stand. It’s a big project for us and I’m sure the fans can’t wait for us to get started.”

Grandstand renovations also include the building of new premium level seats and additional ADA seating at the top of various sections. New semi-ambulatory seats will also be spread throughout the stadium to accommodate fans.

A mockup of the new seats and aisles is on display during the HALLOW-DEGA weekend for fans to try out.

The 2010 Aaron’s Dream Weekend features qualifying for the NASCAR Nationwide Series, followed by the ARCA Series 250 race on Friday, April 23. On Saturday, April 24, fans will see qualifying for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, followed by the Aaron’s 312 NASCAR Nationwide Series race. On Sunday, April 25, the greatest drivers in the world face off in the Aaron’s 499 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race.
