More Practice Time At Daytona

NASCAR has significantly increased the Speedweeks practice time for participants in the NASCAR Nationwide Series and Camping World Truck Series at Daytona International Speedway. But NASCAR spokesman Kerry Tharp said Monday that track schedules sometimes vary year to year and that the change was more of just a general adjustment in the Daytona schedule and not to expect more practice time at other tracks.

With NASCAR’s ban on testing at tracks that play host to Sprint Cup, Nationwide or Camping World Truck races this year, teams will head to the season-opening events without the benefit of three days of January testing at DIS. When they announced the policy last November, NASCAR officials had indicated they would consider giving teams more practice time on the race weekend.

That pretty much isn’t the case for Cup drivers (they have a total of 10 more minutes of practice at Daytona this year), but Nationwide and Truck teams will have more time. Nationwide and Truck teams often practice mostly in the draft because their races are impound events, while Cup teams practice single-car runs on their opening day.

  • Nationwide teams will get 110 minutes of practice on the Wednesday prior to the series Saturday race at Daytona. That’s a 30-minute increase over a year ago. The drivers final practice Thursday is 80 minutes – 10 minutes shorter than a year ago.

  • Truck teams will get two practices totaling 160 minutes on Wednesday this year, compared to just 60 minutes on Wednesday in 2008. The Thursday Truck practice is 125 minutes, five minutes longer than a year ago.

  • Sprint Cup drivers have virtually the same amount of practice time with 210 minutes on the day prior to qualifying, 105 minutes on Wednesday, 60 minutes on Friday and 90 minutes on Saturday. The only difference is the final practice Saturday was just 80 minutes last year.(scenedaily.com)

Daker: Stage Nine, Gordon Still Fifth

Stage 9 was another true test for the Dakar Rally competitors, travelling through numerous terrain changes to reach the finish line in Copiapo. Due to the difficulty of the soft sand landscape at the end of today's stage, the A.S.O. decided to once again shorten the stage by 20 kilometers, ending at the 430-km mark to prevent the competition from getting stuck in the giant sand trap.

After yesterday's stage, a total of 329 teams started stage 9 of the Dakar Rally, including 151 bikes and quads, 116 cars and 62 trucks. Both Team Dakar USA Hummer entries are among the enduring contenders. The No. 309 Monster Energy Toyo Tires Hummer is still fifth overall, while the No. 324 Vanguard Hummer is continuing his fight for a top-20 overall finish.

"Today was a great day for the Monster Energy Hummer as well as the Vanguard Hummer. Unfortunately, the No. 309 Hummer got stuck in a river bed. We lost about nine minutes trying to escape, but only ended up losing today's stage by two minutes to [Carlos] Sainz. Had we not had this problem, I am confident that we would have won today's stage, especially after some of the other leaders experienced some problems. I think Mark Miller broke a wheel and Giniel de Villiers got lost. If they continue to have problems, we have a good chance to win this thing," exclaimed Robby Gordon, driver of the No. 309 Monster Energy Toyo Tires Hummer.

"Eric also had a good day finishing 17th considering all the work that was done to the Vanguard Hummer last night after he rolled during yesterday's special. The Team Dakar USA members did an excellent job prepping both Hummers for today's special, and I can't say enough about them," continued Gordon.

    Labonte Slated For 8 Car?

Bobby Labonte may have found himself the new car he's been seeking. ESPN.com reported on Sunday that officials at Earnhardt-Ganassi Racing are discussing bringing former series champion Labonte aboard to drive the No. 8 car made famous by Dale Earnhardt Jr. before his defection to Hendrick Motorsports. Labonte was released from his contract with Petty Enterprises last month so that he could pursue a role with a different organization.

According to the Web site, the situation being discussed by Earnhardt-Ganassi Racing would put Labonte in the No. 8 car, while Juan Pablo Montoya would drive the No. 41 car and Martin Truex Jr. would pilot the No. 1 car. Aric Almirola would also drive for the team in a part-time role.

Almirola was previously scheduled to take over the No. 8 car, but the team was reportedly having a tough time finding sponsorship. Labonte, the 2000 Sprint Cup champion, has received interest from several sponsors, according to the report.(caller.com)
