Logano To Defend Showdown

Joey Logano, the champion of the 2007 Toyota All-Star Showdown, will return to Irwindale (Calif.) Speedway Jan. 23-24 to defend his title in the race. Logano's 2007 victory at Irwindale capped a magical seasons for the Joe Gibbs Racing driver. It was a season that saw Logano win in his debuts in both the Camping World West and East divisions, in the process becoming the youngest winner ever in each of those divisions. Logano went on to win five of 13 races in the Camping World East in 2007 on the way to becoming the first rookie to win a championship in the division.

The Toyota All-Star Showdown at the half-mile Irwindale Speedway is NASCAR's All-Star event for talent from all over NASCAR's regional and grassroots landscape. Also looking for the All-Star title will be former Camping World Truck Series champion Ron Hornaday, 2008 Camping World East Series champion and 2006 Showdown winner Matt Kobyluck of Montville and 2008 Camping World West Series champion Eric Holmes.

Also confirmed for the show are Peyton Sellers, Eddie MacDonald, Austin Dillon and Brian Ickler. Whelen Modified Tour Champion Ted Christopher gets a guaranteed starting spot for the race, but the Plainville driver is still in the process of securing a ride for the event.

Competition from Irwindale will air live on SPEED at 7 p.m. for both nights of the event.(courant.com)

Tommy Baldwin To Field Cup Car

Former Bill Davis Racing crew chief Tommy Baldwin, who had operated his own team in the NASCAR Busch Series in 2004, plans to field a Sprint Cup team in 2009 under his Tommy Baldwin Racing banner. The team will run Toyotas with engines from Arrington Manufacturing and plans to run the full season, according to a news release from the team. The team did not announce a driver nor a sponsor.

“With tough economic times upon us, the timing for starting this team is right,” Baldwin said. “Our overhead is low and we have a great group of talented mechanics and specialists to choose from. We can offer sponsors the chance to get into NASCAR Sprint Cup racing at a fraction of the costs, without compromising on-track performance, due to our low overhead.” (scenedaily.com)

Lincoln County (N.C.) detectives say a NASCAR 2008 Championship ring worth $5,000 was stolen during a break-in in Lincolnton in December. Investigators say the ring belonged to Daniel Heffner, an employee of Hendrick Motorsports. The ring was stolen when someone broke into Heffner's home on Dec. 19. Deputies say the thief pried open the back door of the home to get inside. The thief also stole a laptop computer and a 32-inch flat screen TV.(wcnc.com)

Record Vehicles Auctioned For Charity

The Barrett-Jackson Auction Company will sell 14 vehicles to benefit various charities at No Reserve during the 38th Annual Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction in Scottsdale, Ariz., Jan. 11-18, 2009. The total marks the most charity vehicles ever sold during a single Barrett-Jackson event, with U.S. automakers General Motors and Ford Motor Company, as well as NASCAR icons Tony Stewart and Rick Hendrick, among the generous donors. Barrett-Jackson, which does not collect commissions on vehicles sold entirely for charity, helped raise a combined $6.7 million for charities during the Scottsdale, Palm Beach, Fla., and Las Vegas auctions in 2008. Bristol Signs Ford

Bristol Motor Speedway announced that two local Ford organizations have teamed up to provide the official vehicle of the track in 2009. Tri-Cities and Charleston Ford Dealer Advertising Group have signed a three-year sponsorship agreement with the .533-mile facility, which is owned by Speedway Motorsports Inc.

“It is exciting for us to renew our partnership with Ford here at Bristol Motor Speedway," BMS President Jeff Byrd said. "We had a strong relationship with them the first two years after [SMI] purchased the track, and teaming up with them again in partnership with the dealers of this region is a good fit.”

Sauter Picks Up Truck Ride

ThorSport Racing announced Tuesday that Johnny Sauter has been named driver of the organization’s No. 13 Chevrolet for 2009 in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. Sauter replaces Shelby Howard, who joined the team in 2008 but netted just one top-five and two top-10 finishes in 25 starts.

Sauter has raced in all three of NASCAR’s national series, including Sprint Cup, where he made all but one of his nine starts in 2008 for Haas CNC Racing. The 2009 campaign is slated to mark Sauter’s first full season of Truck competition.

Sauter has a total of 11 career Truck starts, with the most recent coming last fall at Martinsville Speedway. The addition of Sauter rounds out the Sandusky, Ohio-based ThorSport Racing’s driver lineup for 2009, as driver Matt Crafton will return to the organization’s No. 88 truck.(scenedaily.com)

Brian Scott Returns To Xpress Motorsports

Brian Scott, who was signed to drive in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series for Bill Davis Racing in 2009, will instead return to Xpress Motorsports, according to Xpress Motorsports President Emmett Byrd. Jeff Hensley will also return to the Xpress team as crew chief, and the team will field Toyotas, Byrd said Tuesday.

BDR had announced in September that Scott would drive for the team in 2009, but a majority interest in the team was sold to Triad Racing Technologies in December, and Byrd indicated that the new ownership wasn’t going to field a truck for Scott.

TRT owners Marty Gaunt and Mike Held said recently that it would take a month for them to determine what the team’s racing plans would be. But it appears the team will sideline much, if not all, of its truck program. Angie Skinner confirmed Tuesday that her husband, Mike, has been told that he will not be in a truck for the team next year. Johnny Benson, who won BDR's first NASCAR title by claiming the Truck championship in 2008, had announced before the end of last season that he would not return in 2009.(scenedaily.com)
