Gordon To Race In Brazil

Michael Schumacher and Jeff Gordon will participate in a charity kart race organized by Felipe Massa in Sao Paulo, Brazil this weekend. Seven-time Formula One champion Schumacher and four-time NASCAR champion Gordon will race in the "International Challenge of the Stars" in southern Brazil, organizers confirmed on Tuesday. Other drivers participating include F1's Rubens Barrichello and Indy Racing League's Tony Kanaan and Vitor Meira. Former MotoGP racer Alex Barros and F1 test drivers Luca Badoer, Vitantonio Liuzzi and Lucas Di Grassi also are scheduled to race. The event, in its fourth edition, will aid local charities and recent victims of flooding in the region. Massa was runner-up to Lewis Hamilton in this year's F1 championship.(canadian press)

Edwards Wins 4th Quarter Driver of the Year

Carl Edwards, who narrowly missed winning two NASCAR championships in the same year, has been voted fouth quarter Driver of the Year for 2008. In the voting period Edwards won three Sprint Cup races and had only two finishes worse than top four. Additionally he won three Nationwide races in the final quarter. You could say he threw everything he had at those championships, and in one race, at Kansas City, he literally threw his Roush Racing Ford in the wall in an effort to get past Jimmie Johnson the eventual race winner and Cup Champion. He was also the fourth quarter winner in 2005.

In the voting Edwards took ten first-place ballots and received votes from the entire panel. With 128 points he beat Jimmie Johnson. Johnson, the reigning Sprint Cup Champion and the 2006 & 2007 Driver of the Year, received seven first-place votes and totaled 74 points. Tony Schumacher, NHRA's Top Fuel Champion and winner of the 3rd quarter Driver of the Year 2008, received one first-place vote and totaled 79 points. Cruz Pedregon, the NHRA's Funny Car Champion this year, was fourth in the voting with one first place vote. (examiner.com)

Johnson’s Exposure Worth $510,161,750

Jimmie Johnson’s 2008 NASCAR dominance did not end on the racetrack, as the newly crowned three-time Cup Series Champion earned a combined total of $510,161,750 of in-broadcast television exposure, the most of any driver, for his sponsors during race telecasts this past season. According to research conducted by Joyce Julius & Associates, Inc. — which specializes in measuring the impact of sponsorships across all forms of media — 62 brands appearing on locations such as Johnson’s car, uniform and support crew’s uniforms appeared clear and in-focus for a total of 59 hours, 28 minutes, 39 seconds (59:28:39) during television coverage of NASCAR’s premier series in 2008. Additionally, the sponsors were mentioned by Johnson, his crew, or the announcers 316 times. Exposure value is calculated by comparing the on-screen time and mentions to the estimated cost of a commercial spot during each respective race telecast throughout the season.

Johnson’s top sponsor, Lowe’s, garnered nearly $200 million of exposure value, or 39% of the total in-broadcast exposure associated with Johnson, to lead all team sponsors in 2008. Johnson also clocked in with the highest exposure contribution to a carmaker, as Chevrolet collected nearly eight hours of on-screen time and $67.8 million of exposure value from its association with the three-time champion. Carl Edwards mirrored his runner up status in the points championship by collecting the second-most exposure for his sponsors, as 76 brands monitored with Edwards amassed 58:50:51, 311 mentions and nearly $496 million. One area Edwards did manage to surpass his rival Johnson was in exposure captured during the Chase for the Sprint Cup. During telecasts of the final 10 races, Edwards' sponsors laid claim to $225 million of exposure, compared to $201 million resulting from the Johnson’s effort.
