Fans Can Vote On Sprint Monster Moment

On Monday Sprint opened voting for the Sprint Monster Moment, the only award voted on by the fans and presented to a driver at the nationally televised NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Awards Ceremony.

Fans who are a member of the Sprint Crew Community on NASCAR.com can vote for the 2008 Sprint Monster Moment at (nascar.com). Voting is unlimited and ends at 5 p.m. (EST) Wednesday, Dec. 3. Membership is free and new members may also vote. Register for the Sprint Crew Community at http://community.nascar.com/crews/sprint.

A Sprint Monster Moment is defined as an action in a race where a driver exhibits extreme competiveness, passion or determination to win. Fans can choose from five clips. This year’s Sprint Monster Moment nominees are:

  • Carl Edwards bumps Kyle Busch at the Bristol night race to take the lead and the win.
  • Greg Biffle makes a late-race pass at Dover to hold off teammates Matt Kenseth and Carl Edwards and capture his second consecutive win, making him two-for-two in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup.
  • Carl Edwards’ valiant wall-brushing, final-lap pass for the lead at Kansas. Despite gaining the lead with the aggressive move, he was passed again on the final stretch by Jimmie Johnson and finished a heartbreaking second place.
  • Jimmie Johnson’s rapid climb from 12th to second place at Atlanta with just six laps to go. The move earned him a commanding lead in the Chase for the Sprint Cup.
  • Carl Edwards dominates the season-ending Ford 400 by leading the most laps and winning the race and consequently putting as much pressure as he could on point leader Jimmie Johnson.
The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Awards Ceremony will air at 9 p.m. (EST) Friday, Dec. 5, on ESPN Classic and will re-air at 2 p.m. (EST) Monday, Dec. 8, on ESPN2. Tune in to see the winning moment as selected by race fans.

Record Food Drive At Infineon Raceway

Infineon Raceway donated a single-year record of nearly 3,000 pounds of non-perishable food items to Friends in Sonoma Helping (FISH) and the Committee on the Shelterless (COTS) in Petaluma during the facility’s 8th annual Thanksgiving Food Drive. The amount marked one of the largest single donations either food bank will receive this holiday season. Since the inception of the annual food drive in 2000, Infineon Raceway has distributed more than 12,000 pounds of non-perishable food items.

The raceway is proud to aid such well-respected organizations. FISH has been serving needy Sonoma Valley residents since 1970, while COTS, which is based in Petaluma, delivered more than 500,000 pounds of food in 2007. Moreover, COTS served more than 102,000 meals through its Petaluma Kitchen in 2007.

“The donation from Infineon Raceway helps us hit our target number of supplies,” said Sherman Bielfelt, a long-time FISH volunteer who helps sort all the food donations. “We make Christmas baskets from the food donated, and it’s tough to make baskets without food. We’ll serve more than 400 families during the holidays with this.”

“Infineon Raceway’s gift enables people that are hanging by their fingertips to have a good holiday,” said John Records, executive director of COTS. “We are so grateful that the raceway serves the community beyond just providing entertainment. This is a great thing that they do.”

Infineon Raceway was not alone in its efforts. It was joined in the food drive by four Northern California Mary’s Pizza Shack locations, the Racer’s Group in Petaluma, the Petaluma Fire Department, the Petaluma Chamber of Commerce, as well as Destination RKA in Windsor. Sonoma Gourmet of Cotati also made a generous donation of three pallets of gourmet food items.

Hamilton's Team Closes Down

Bobby Hamilton Racing-Virginia will cease operations at the end of the week, Lori Shuler Hamilton, chief operating officer for the Craftsman Truck Series organization, confirmed Monday.

The team, started by the late Bobby Hamilton, moved from its base in Nashville, Tenn., to Martinsville, Va., after the 2007 season when it added partners to the ownership group.

The team's sponsorship from Dodge ended after the 2008 season. The organization started the season with two trucks but cut back to one during the year. Dennis Setzer finished eighth in points and earned a win at Martinsville -- the 20th win for the organization since its inception in 1999.(sportingnews.com)
