Kenseth Re-Signs With Roush Fenway RacingRoush Fenway Racing announced that it has re-signed 2003 Sprint Cup Champion Matt Kenseth to a multi-year contract. Kenseth has been with Roush Fenway since 1998 and has claimed 16 Sprint Cup Series wins and 24 Nationwide Series wins in addition to Roush Fenway’s first Sprint Cup championship.“It’s been a great 11 years at Roush Fenway Racing,” said Kenseth, driver of the No. 17 DEWALT Ford. “I appreciate everything Jack and DEWALT have done for me over the years. We’ve had a lot of success together including a championship and I’m really proud of that. I’m looking forward to the next few years and winning another championship with Roush Fenway.” Roush Fenway Racing owner Jack Roush was elated with the news stating, “Matt Kenseth is a champion in every sense of the word and John Henry and I are proud to have him in our stable of drivers. Over the last 11 years Matt has been a leader in our organization and a voracious competitor on track, and to know that he will continue on in that role with Roush Fenway is gratifying.”
Infineon Raceway Recycles 17 TonsInfineon Raceway has reaffirmed its position as the recycling leader in the motor-sports industry, collecting more than 17 tons of recyclable materials at its major events during the 2008 racing season. In all, the raceway collected 34,568 pounds of materials at its NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series, IndyCar® Series and AMA Superbike Series event weekends. That brings the total to more than 73 tons (147,524 pounds) of recyclable materials since the inception of the program in 2004. The tonnage equates to slightly more than the total weight of a full NASCAR Sprint Cup Series starting field – 43 stock cars. The breakdown for the 2008 motor-racing season included:
“This year was really one of our best yet. We added about 20-percent more recycling containers to the facility, and we had additional staff collecting the recycling to help be sure we’re getting as much material as possible,” said Mutter. “We collected about 10-percent more than we did last year, which is a great improvement. Anheuser-Busch still supports us with bins and recycling bags, and they’re a great, positive partner on this program.” In addition, Safety-Kleen Systems, Inc., which is headquartered in Texas, provides oil recycling and re-refining services to Infineon Raceway, as well as 64 other racetracks/drag strips around the country. Everything that Safety-Kleen collects during an event at Infineon Raceway during its NASCAR, IndyCar and NHRA events, such as motor oil, gasoline or antifreeze, is eventually put back into a usable product. Safety-Kleen makes green work. "The Green movement is not new to us. We've been Green since 1968, when the company started,” said Drew Patey, motorsports manager for Safety-Kleen. “We’re proud to refine over 300 million gallons of used oil a year.”
Media Nearly Gets It RightThe media proved it did its homework prior to the 2008 NASCAR Sprint Cup season, correctly predicting 11 of the 12 drivers who qualified for the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup. The only Chase participant the media left out was Greg Biffle (No. 16 3M Ford), who was predicted to finish 15th. Jimmie Johnson (No. 48 Lowe’s Chevrolet), who wrapped up his third consecutive title on Sunday, was predicted to finish second behind his owner and teammate, Jeff Gordon (No. 24 DuPont Chevrolet). Gordon came up short in his bid for a fifth series championship, finishing seventh in the standings. Kyle Busch (No. 18 M&M’s Toyota), the top seed to start the Chase, and Carl Edwards (No. 99 Office Depot Ford), who led all drivers with nine wins, were selected sixth and seventh, respectively, in the preseason. The biggest surprise came from second-year driver David Ragan (No. 6 AAA Ford) who finished 20 positions better than the media predicted he would. Ragan finished the season 13th after the media predicted he would be 33rd. 2008 Media Predictions 2008 Results1 Jeff Gordon 1 Jimmie Johnson 2 Jimmie Johnson 2 Carl Edwards 3 Tony Stewart 3 Greg Biffle 4 Dale Earnhardt Jr. 4 Kevin Harvick 5 Matt Kenseth 5 Clint Bowyer 6 Kyle Busch 6 Jeff Burton 7 Carl Edwards 7 Jeff Gordon 8 Kurt Busch 8 Denny Hamlin 9 Kevin Harvick 9 Tony Stewart 10 Denny Hamlin 10 Kyle Busch 11 Clint Bowyer 11 Matt Kenseth 12 Jeff Burton 12 Dale Earnhardt Jr.
