Edwards Wins At TexasWhile everyone was stopping for fuel in the waning moments of the Dickies 500 at Texas Motor Speedway, Carl Edwards and Crew Chief Bob Osborne gambled using a gas mileage strategy to make it 69 laps (103 miles) on a tank of gas. The trick was to just go half throttle -- he had a big lead anyway because everyone else was pitting. It worked, much to the team's surprise, Edwards picked up his seventh victory this year and the 15th of his 155 race career. “First Bob said, ‘We’re two-tenths of a lap short, so conserve.’ Then he came back and said, ‘No, we’re four laps short, just go real hard and we’ll pit.’ Then he came back again and said, ‘We’ll conserve.’ So just by all that I kind of knew that he wasn’t too sure about it, but I’m really glad it worked out," said Edwards. "It’s unreal. It’s a great day. The fans are awesome. My guys are awesome. We’re closing ground on Jimmie, that’s cool.”Jeff Gordon, who started on the pole fell a lap down and was able to make it up. He also was using the same fuel strategy that Edwards was using and finished 12 seconds behind Edwards in second place. "That Lucky Dog really played in our favor because we able to roll around there quite a few laps and come in later and top off, I conserved a little bit under yellow," said Gordon. "When they said we were one lap short, I really wasn't that worried. I was still letting off real early. We didn't know the No. 99 was going to go for it, obviously a great call by Steve Letarte on the DuPont/Nicorette Chevrolet." Jamie McMurray finished third and Clint Bowyer was fourth. Greg Biffle brought his Ford home in fifth place followed by Kyle Busch, Kevin Harvick, Martin Truex Jr., Martin Truex Jr. and David Reutimann to round out the top ten. Points leader Jimmie Johnson went into the race leading by 183 points but when Johnson finished 15th, one lap down, Edwards was able to slash 77 off of Johnson's lead, to 106 points. "There are two races left," said Johnson. I have known all along we were going to have to fight every week for this thing. We had a nice big points lead and we still have a great points lead, but in racing anything can happen and usually does. Today didn't go our way; it went the way the No. 99 needed, the No. 16 and those guys."
The next event on the Sprint Cup schedule – the ninth race of the 10-race Chase for the Sprint Cup – is the November 9th, Checker Auto Parts 500k at Phoenix International Raceway. The race begins at 3:30 p.m. ET with live, high-definition coverage provided by ABC beginning with its pre-race show at 3:00 p.m. eastern time. The race will also be broadcast live on SIRIUS Satellite Radio Channel 128 and PRN radio.
Busch Will Donate $100,000 To Sam ArdKyle Busch dedicated the Saturday's Nationwide Series win to Sam Ard and then vowed to give Ard $100,000. Ard has been suffering from Alzheimer's disease and has been strapped financially. "Sam Ard was one of the pioneers of the sport and this really means a lot to me," Busch said after his famous victory bow to the crowd. "I got to thinking about it and I decided I'm going give him $100,000 to try to help him out." -- Busch had met Ard just one time. “He came to a race -- I think it was maybe Homestead. (NASCAR) had some champions there of the past years there and when Sam was there I shook his hand and said hello to him and (told him) what he means to this sport," Busch said. "That was about the only time I’ve had to interact with him. I know his record of 10 wins and I know what he’s done for the sport, I know what all that is and how he’s built the Nationwide Series. His name is one of the lead names you look at along with (Tommy) Houston, (Mark) Martin and (Tommy) Ellis and all those guys. It’s a pretty cool list of names to look at and see who’s built this series.”
Bigger Wheel May Take YearsA lot of talk in the garage has been about the possibility of Goodyear introducing a larger, wider tire to better handle the loads this car creates and improve handling. Well, don't expect it any time soon."It's a science project that we're involved in with Goodyear," said John Darby, Sprint Cup series director. "Obviously, a change that major would probably never see a race track for five years." Five years? Darby said such a change to the tires would require major changes elsehwere: "You've got tire technology, you've got wheel manufacturers, you've got brake manufacturers. It's just so many components on something like that that it would be as big a change as when we left bias-ply and went to radial tires."(hamptonroads.com)
Grant Suit To Stay In New YorkThe Mauricia Grant sexual and racial discrimination and harassment lawsuit will remain in New York. NASCAR had requested to move the case to either North Carolina or Florida.U.S. District Court Judge Deborah A. Batts ruled that because NASCAR has a marketing office in New York City, federal court in Manhattan is an appropriate venue for the case. Batts also cited the facts that Grant worked races at Watkins Glen, alleges discriminatory practices occurred while in New York and was allegedly disciplined and demoted while working in the state of New York. “Courts are not required to determine the ‘best venue’ but merely a logical one with a substantial connection to the litigation,” Batts wrote. Grant, who worked for the NASCAR Busch Series from 2005 through much of 2007, alleges in a $225 million lawsuit that she was fired two months after airing complaints of race and gender discrimination and harassment by series officials, including series director Joe Balash. The African-American woman details more than 50 instances of alleged racial and sexual harassment. In its response to the suit, NASCAR alleges that Grant coined some of the terms she deemed offensive and that she was fired for cause. NASCAR alleges that Grant did not follow the sanctioning body’s procedures for addressing employee concerns. The sides expect a trial to last two weeks but no trial date has been set.(scenedaily.com)
