Terry Labonte To Fill In For Petty

Terry Labonte will be a teammate to his brother Bobby at Petty Enterprises starting next month, pending sponsor approval. Terry (and Chad McCumbee) will drive the No. 45 when Kyle Petty gets out for the summer. Petty is scheduled to compete in the Coca-Cola 600 and then miss the next seven races (one for his daughter's wedding and the other six to work as an analyst for TNT)

McCumbee likely will drive at Dover and Chicago. Terry Labonte likely will drive in the other five races. Labonte's addition is key for Petty Enterprises because the No. 45 car is not in the top 35 in car owner points. Labonte's second of his two titles came in 1996 -- that makes him the most recent champion not in the top 35 since Bill Elliott's title came in 1988. Thus, Labonte would be guaranteed a starting spot each time he starts, while the Wood Brothers would lose that even with Elliott in the seat. (hamptonroads.com)

Lap Leader Award To Busch

Kyle Busch led seven times for 169 laps to earn WIX Filters Lap Leader of the Race honors in tonight’s Dodge Challenger 500. Busch has led at least one lap in eight of the 11 races this season for a total of 567 laps.

  • A Joe Gibbs Racing driver has led the most laps in each of the last three consecutive NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races.

  • Busch won Saturday’s race at Darlington, his third victory in the last three Sprint Cup Series races. He claimed his seventh top-five and eighth top-10 of the 2008 season.

  • The driver leading the most laps at Darlington has finished no worse than sixth in the last five consecutive races at Darlington.

  • Since 2000, the driver leading the most laps has won five races at Darlington and grabbed nine top-five finishes.

  • Busch leads Jimmie Johnson by one race (4-3) in the overall WIX Filters Lap Leader standings.

  • Unofficially Busch leads the Sprint Cup Series championship standings, 79 points ahead of second-place Jeff Burton and 134 in front of third-place Dale Earnhardt Jr.

    Kyle Busch Wins At Darlington

Kyle Busch can't be stopped. Loose lugnuts, Missing lugnuts, penalties, not to mention that Busch complained about not having much of a brake pedal and at times the car wouldn't turn and two encounters with the wall, he looked to be indestructible and unstoppable. Busch was leading the race when he pitted on lap 40 during the third caution and was penalized for a missing lugnut. Busch restarted at the end of the longest line (29th) and charged through the field, putting on a driving clinic in the process. Busch retook the lead on lap 270 and there was no catching him from there.

In his fourth try, Busch became the youngest driver to ever win at Darlington Raceway. Busch led a total of 169 laps on the way to his first victory at the historic track, his third win this year and his seventh win in 125 career races. It was the fourth victory for Toyota in 2008.

Carl Edwards finished second with Jeff Gordon coming home in the third spot. Except for some minor scrapping of the outside wall, Dale Earnhardt Jr. kept his nose clean and finished fourth. A great run by David Ragan vaulted him into the fifth position -- he was followed by Matt Kenseth, Denny Hamlin, Travis Kvapil, Dave Blaney and Jeff Burton to round out the top ten. The race featured 8 cautions for 30 laps. There were 35 lead changes among 15 different drivers. 24 different cars took a total of 40 hits to the outside wall (40 Darlington Stripes).

The Sprint Cup Series is off next week, that is for a points paying race, but next Saturday night the Sprint All-Star race will run under the lights at Lowe's Motor Speedway. The Sprint Cup Series returns to action on Sunday, May 25th at Lowe's Motor Speedway for the Coca-Cola 600. That race is scheduled to start at 5:00 PM / Eastern Time on Fox.
