Richmond Ratings UpThis past weekend’s Crown Royal Presents The Dan Lowry 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Richmond International Raceway not only grabbed attention by selling all 112,029 seats, it was also the most viewed NASCAR event in the history of America’s Premier Short Track. The 400-lap race, which was broadcast live on FOX earned a 4.5 final national rating, up +5% over last year’s 4.3 final national rating. Saturday night’s Sprint Cup Series event aired directly against the NBA Playoffs, NHL Playoffs, NCAA Men’s Volleyball Championship, PGA Champions Tour, NHRA, Boxing and PBR. “This once again reiterates the fact that Richmond really is ‘Racing Perfection,’” stated Doug Fritz, president of Richmond International Raceway. “The drivers love racing at Richmond International Raceway and the fans love watching such great racing, whether it’s in person or on the television.” Fans both sitting in the stands and at home saw a great show Saturday night, as hometown hero Denny Hamlin looked like he was going to walk away with a Richmond sweep, winning both Friday night’s NASCAR Nationwide Series race and Saturday night’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race. When Hamlin cut a tire, fans were on the edge of their seats (both in the grandstands and their couches) waiting to see Dale Earnhardt Jr. drive his Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet to Victory Lane. In the end, Clint Bowyer took the checkered flag, winning his first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Richmond International Raceway. Fans who missed the action this past weekend can purchase tickets starting May 24 for “One Last Race to Make the Chase,” the Chevy Rock & Roll 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race on Saturday, September 6. Be here to see if your driver makes it into the 2008 Race to the Chase. Tickets start at $80 and can be purchased by calling 866-455-RACE (7223) or by logging on to www.rir.com.
Jarretts To Be Honored At Lowe'sNed and Dale Jarrett, one of only two father-and-son combinations to claim championships in NASCAR's premier division, will be simultaneously inducted into Lowe's Motor Speedway's Court of Legends. H.A. "Humpy" Wheeler, president and general manager of the 1.5-mile superspeedway, will honor the two North Carolina natives who will have their signatures, footprints and handprints immortalized in concrete near the track's main entrance.Officials of Lowe's Motor Speedway and UPS will also announce the winner who will ride-along with Dale Jarrett in the UPS truck during pre-race ceremonies for the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race on Saturday night, May 17. The $1 million-to-win event will be Jarrett's final NASCAR start.
Darlington Goodyear Tire NotesWith the complete re-pave of Darlington Raceway since last season, Goodyear has tested extensively at the track and brought a new combination of left- and right-side tires for teams to race on this weekend -- Goodyear ran it's first two-day test at Darlington with drivers Greg Biffle, Jeff Gordon and Ryan Newman in mid-March, and settled on it's right-side tire recommendation during that session -- the tire manufacturer scheduled a one-day continuation test with the same drivers for early-April, and confirmed it's left-side recommendation at that session.Darlington is the only track at which NASCAR teams are scheduled to run this specific combination of left- and right-side tire codes this season -- however, teams will run this right-side code (D-4130) with a different left-side code at Charlotte later this month -- teams in both the NASCAR Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series will run the same tire codes this weekend -- as on all NASCAR ovals greater than one mile in length, teams are required to run inner liners in all four tire positions at Darlington -- air pressure in those inner liners should be 12-25 psi greater than that of the outer tire.
