Second Kansas Date On HoldA decision Friday by developers to withdraw their application to build a hotel and casino at Kansas Speedway has put in doubt the securing of a second yearly Sprint Cup race for the speedway. It has almost certainly ended hopes of getting a second race for the 2010 NASCAR season. And it could permanently end hopes for the second date and the construction of a road-racing course at Kansas Speedway.Friday morning, just hours before the proposal by International Speedway Corp. and the Cordish Co. to construct a $705-million Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in turn two of the speedway was scheduled to receive final approval, the developers pulled their bid. The developers said that the tight credit market and economic crisis currently plaguing the country forced the move. They said that they plan to resubmit a bid that would allow them to construct the casino first and then add such amenities as the hotel and retail shops as the country’s economy improves, something not allowed for under the bid which was accepted by the Kansas Racing and Gaming Commission earlier this year. International Speedway Corp, which owns Kansas Speedway, had promised prior to being granted permission to build and manage the state-owned casino that it would petition NASCAR for the second date if the casino were built. ISC also promised to construct a road-racing course at the Wyandotte County facility. News that the project had been put on hold pending a second successful bid that would allow developers to phase in the project, means that the granting of a second Cup date to the track is on hold.(kansascity.com)
