Robby Gordon Wins Special In Stage Six

On the familiar tracks of Veszprem, Robby Gordon claimed his second special win on the sixth stage of the Central Europe Rally. Gordon, who yesterday suffered a major setback in the overall classification yesterday when he broke the rear hub of his Hummer was determined to showcase his teams talents. Before the start of the second special of the day he and BJ Baldwin wagered dinner on the outcome. The bet was to see if BJ could stay within 45 seconds of Gordon's time.

While the chance to win the rally overall is all but gone, the two drivers served notice that the Hummers are for real. Both drivers attacked the course and in the end Gordon finished first, one second over Carlos Sainz of Spain. Baldwin was not far behind, in fact just 19 seconds. Gordon got the victory and Baldwin gets dinner.

Team Dakar USA also had a strong showing in the first 157km special in the morning. Gordon and Baldwin claimed the sixth and seventh spots respectively. The Vanguard Hummer has now moved up into the seventh spot while Gordon's Monster Energy Toyo Tire Hummer is in 11th.

Tomorrow the Central Europe Rally wraps with a 155km special on the Veszprem tracks and then heads to Balaton Lake for the final festivities. Instead of participating in the festivities Gordon will board a plane and deadhead for Talladega for Sundays NASCAR race.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. Won't Attend DEI Day Celebration

Dale Earnhardt Jr. said on Friday at Talladega Superspeedway that he would not attend the celebration of his father's life at Dale Earnhardt Inc. on April 29th. Earnhardt offered no explanation but did say that Aric Almirola, Mark Martin, Kerry Earnhardt and Martin Truex Jr. will be there. "I like the fact that they're making the point to have the celebration every year at DEI," said Earnhardt. "It goes along to further how we think of my father and to remember my father long after his death. I'm very proud of that, I'm very happy for Teresa (Earnhardt) and Dale Earnhardt Inc. and all the drivers that participate. It's a great sense of pride to have the other drivers showing up."

Old School Racing Delayed Until 2009

Old School Racing officials have put off plans for their inaugural season until next year. The series, based out of Mooresville, N.C., had planned to field cars for drivers such as David Pearson, Harry Gant, James Hylton, Geoffrey Bodine and others this year

“I regret that the 2008 season has been canceled and apologize to the old-school fans that have been dying to see their past heroes compete once again,” said Norm Weaver, managing partner of the OSR. “But, for those die-hard fans, we are planning few surprises for 2008 in hopes of filling some of that void.”

The announcement said organizers were taking on new partners but offered no details.

“We had a great schedule planned for 2008," Weaver said. "But to make this series survive the test of time, with the help of our new partners, we have designed a much better series for the ultimate fans' experience. I don’t want to go too far into the details, because we want to do that when we announce the redesigned Old School Racing program.”

Papis To Drive Road Course Races For Haas Automation

Haas CNC Racing announced that Max Papis will drive the No. 70 Haas Automation Chevrolet during the two road-course races on the 2008 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series schedule. “I’m very excited to have this opportunity,” Papis said. “After testing for Hendrick Motorsports and developing more knowledge about the COT, I’m proud and honored to carry over that experience to the Haas CNC Racing program.” The 2008 Sprint Cup Series road-course races are June 22 at Infineon Raceway and Aug. 10 at Watkins Glen International.

Tony Stewart On Aaron's 312 Nationwide Pole

Tony Stewart put his Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota on the pole for Saturday's Aaron's 312 Nationwide Series race. Stewart turned a lap of 51.676 seconds around the 2.66-mile track for a speed of 185.308 mph. It was Stewart's second pole this year, both coming on restrictor plate tracks. Stewart won the pole at the opening Nationwide Series race at Daytona International Speedway in February and also won that race. Mike Bliss, driving a James Finch Phoenix Racing Chevrolet, will start on the outside pole for the afternoon event and another Nationwide Series regular, Jason Leffler will start in the third position. Rookie Dario Franchitti qualified fourth and Brad Keselowski rolls off the grid in fifth place. Points leader Clint Bowyer, starts sixth followed by Dale Earnhardt Jr., Kyle Busch, rookie Cale Gale and Denny Hamlin to round out the top ten.
