Roush Fenway Racing Names Fan of Year

Roush Fenway Racing's fans have spoken and the 2007 Fan of the Year is…Jarrott Kirby! With over 100,000 online votes, Kirby pulled ahead of the other weekly winners to clinch the title on Friday. Kirby was selected the winner via online voting from his fellow fans. There were no other factors used to determine the winner.

"We're thrilled with the voter turnout we had and we're honored to have Jarrott as our first-ever Fan of the Year. He's going to be a great spokesperson for our fans and we're going to have a really fun year with him and his family," said Amy Rowell, director of internet marketing for Roush Fenway Racing.

"Jarrott has had a lot to go through this past year and through everything he's remained a hard-core Roush Fenway Racing (and Roush Performance) fan," continued Rowell. "The entry his wife Paula submitted showed us that and apparently it spoke to the fans as well. I spoke to him and his wife this morning and they were both just so excited. I was excited for them too! I'm looking forward to getting to know them. They seem like really sweet, genuine people."

Below is the entry that Paula Kirby submitted on behalf of her husband, Jarrott:

"I am actually entering this for my husband, Jarrott Kirby. He has to be the ultimate Roush Fenway Racing fan. Last year on April 1, he was in a serious motorcycle accident which resulted in two broken femurs, a broken arm and ankle and (he) ended up losing his left leg. His accident was the day before the April race at Texas Motor Speedway, which we did have tickets for but obviously were unable to go. He was in ICU not even aware of anything around him. We made sure the race was on the television in his room, we were only able to go in his room every two hours for 15 minutes, the last time we went in his room before the race was over, Jack Roush was on the TV and he woke up long enough to see him and said, 'It's Jack Roush, he's my hero!' And he was out again.

"Now almost a year since his accident, he has given up motorcycles and moved on to trucks, a Roush (Performance) F-150 at that. As soon as he saw that truck, there was no turning back. We also have a dog and his name of course is Roush Racer. My husband is such a huge fan of anything Roush, it's ridiculous. His dream is to be the next 'Driver X' for Roush Racing. He's always asking if I think he could do it even though he is an amputee. The day of his accident he was wearing a Roush Performance t-shirt. The shirt had to be cut off of him but he saved the chest patch from the shirt and has it laminated into his prosthetic leg. Jarrott absolutely idolizes Jack Roush and Mark Martin."

The 2007 Roush Fenway Racing Fan of the Year will be the team's VIP guest at the 2008 Coca-Cola 600 at Lowe's Motor Speedway on Sunday, May 25, 2008. Schedule and details will be provided to the winning fan at a later date.

The winner will also receive apparel and merchandise designating them as the 2007 Roush Fenway Racing Fan of the Year. S/he will be recognized in a display at the Roush Fenway Racing museum in Concord, North Carolina and will be featured on RoushFenway.com in a designated 2007 Fan of the Year area. The 2007 Roush Fenway Racing Fan of the Year will serve as an "unofficial spokesperson" of the Roush Fenway Racing Online Fan Clubs on www.RoushFenway.com and will be used in various press releases and online materials throughout the year.

Security Guard Files Lawsuit Against Kahne

A Miami law firm announced its plans Monday to file a lawsuit against a NASCAR driver accused of assaulting a 62-year-old security guard at the Homestead-Miami Speedway last month. Russell Dohan, an attorney with Goldberg & Dohan, said the lawsuit against NASCAR driver Kasey Kahne would be filed Monday in Miami.

Kahne, 27, is charged with one count of battery against Archibald Hutchison, who was working as a security guard at the speedway for a race Nov. 16 when the incident allegedly occurred.

According to a Homestead police report, Kahne was attempting to access a restricted recreational vehicle parking lot on a golf cart after he finished driving his racecar when Hutchison stopped him and asked him for credentials. Kahne stated that he was a driver and didn't need any, then got out of the golf cart and tried to walk through the gate, the report stated. When Hutchison blocked the entrance and asked Kahne for credentials again, Kahne pushed Hutchison to the ground, according to the report.

The report said Kahne was stopped and detained by law enforcement officers who witnessed the incident. He was arrested later that day and released on the signed condition that he appears in court.

Hutchison, who was advised not to let any unauthorized people through gate 208 without exception, was treated at the speedway's medical facility for minor bruises and abrasions, according to the report. Dohan said Hutchison hasn't been able to return to work because of his injuries.

Dohan said his client has suffered emotionally from the incident and is "getting killed" by NASCAR fans on Web site blogs. He also said he planned to have his client speak with the media about the lawsuit at a news conference planned for Tuesday.(local10.com)

UPDATE...Statement From Gillett Evernham President

Responding to the lawsuit filed today against Gillett Evernham Motorsports’ driver Kasey Kahne for an incident that occurred at Homestead-Miami Speedway on Friday, Nov. 16, 2007, Rick Russell, president of Gillett Evernham Motorsports, issued the following statement:
  • “Gillett Evernham Motorsports is a close family and Kasey Kahne is an integral part of our organization. The alleged action in this case is not consistent with the Kasey Kahne we know. It is unfortunate the issue has progressed to this point. We support our driver, Kasey Kahne, and have complete confidence in the legal process.”

Cool City Customs To Sponsor Truck Race

The forecast for Michigan International Speedway’s NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race in June will be cool. Cool City Customs, a Michigan-based motorcycle customs shop, will sponsor the Cool City Customs 200 at Michigan International Speedway on June 14. It will be the first NASCAR sponsorship of any kind for the Lyons, Mich., company that specializes in the customizing and selling of many of the extravagant motorcycles on the road today.

The three-year sponsorship deal for the Cool City Customs 200 will extend through 2010. The sponsorship also makes Cool City Customs the “Official Custom Bike Builder” of Michigan International Speedway. “This is a tremendous opportunity for Cool City Customs to make in-roads with our NASCAR fans,” track President Roger Curtis said. “This is a unique sponsorship in that we’ve never had a motorcycle business sponsor a race here at MIS. It is a natural fit that will give Cool City Customs some great benefits in helping their business grow.”

“I am so excited that Cool City Customs will be the sponsor of the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at MIS in 2008 and beyond,” Cool City Customs owner Bill Hattan said. “We feel many of our bike customers are NASCAR fans so this only made sense when the opportunity came about.”

Hattan suffered a near-fatal accident in 2002 when a car traveling 80 mph struck him in a construction zone where he was working. One of his co-workers was killed in the same incident, but Hattan managed to survive through a 45-day coma and the loss of his legs (he now wears prosthetics). An accident of this nature affects people differently. It charted a new life course for Hattan and led to the opening of Cool City Customs in 2005. “Opening this shop was a dream come true for me because I am such a motorcycle enthusiast,” Hattan said. “I’ve had to go through many hardships in my life since 2002, but I’ve managed to overcome a great deal and create this bike shop, which has been great thus far. Activating this partnership with MIS will put us on the map nationally and regionally, which I’m very excited about.”

Cool City Customs has become one of the nation’s premier motorcycle custom shops. The shop announced in September its Legend Series brand with the backing of legendary and local boxing great Thomas “The Hitman” Hearns. “My decision to team up with Cool City Customs is due to the dedication Mr. Hattan has for his company along with the innovative and state-of-the-art designs they have created for the bike enthusiast,” Hearns said.

The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series races at MIS features some of the best racing the series has to offer. With speeds exceeding 180 mph, the NCTS has become quite a fan favorite since joining the MIS schedule in 1999. Last June, Travis Kvapil made a late-race pass of Kyle Busch to earn his second career truck win at the two-mile oval. With many Sprint Cup regulars battling the seasoned veterans, the Cool City Customs 200 will be a must-see event in 2008.

Tickets for the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Cool City Customs 200 are currently on sale by calling the MIS Ticket Hotline at 800-354-1010 or by visiting MISpeedway.com.
