After a season of achievements and memorable competition, the payoff for the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series drivers came Friday in the form of the presentation of the final point fund awards. NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson (No. 48 Lowe’s Chevrolet) will collect a point fund award of $7,317,499, bringing his 2007 total winnings to $15,313,920. The back-to-back champion has won more than $59.5 million during his NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series career.

In addition to the point fund and his race winnings, Johnson also receives $350,000 for winning four special awards – the Goodyear Gatorback Fastest Lap Award, the Dow Automotive Strategic Call of the Race Award, the Sunoco Diamond Performance Award and the Goodyear Award.

The NASCAR NEXTEL Cup top 10 drivers will share $24,068,732, the largest top 10 point fund payout in series history. Each of the top 10 will receive over $1 million.

Johnson’s Hendrick Motorsports teammate, Jeff Gordon (No. 24 DuPont Chevrolet), finished second in the standings and receives $3,280,915 from the point fund, and $497,150 for winning four special awards – the Budweiser Pole Award, the Checkers/Rally’s Double Drive-Thru Challenge Award, the Commit Lozenges Commit to Win Award and the WIX Filters Lap Leader Award – to go along with his race winnings for a total of $10,926,687. With this payout Gordon, the series’ all-time money leader, has collected $93,300,213 during his career.

ISC-New York Land Deal Fails

While disappointed a $100 million deal to sell its former NASCAR site on Staten Island fell through, International Speedway Corp. officials remain confident they will sell the 676-acre piece -- and soon. Brian K. Wilson, ISC vice president of corporate development, said the racing company is looking for another buyer for the site in Bloomfield, after its deal with ProLogis, the world's largest developer of distribution warehouses, collapsed. Harris said there are no plans to revive the 82,500-seat race track proposal at the site. "We are still, of course, very interested in the metro New York area, but not in Staten Island," he said.

Faced with political opposition, Daytona Beach-based ISC last year dropped its plans to build a NASCAR track and put the land up for sale.

ProLogis planned to build an industrial park with 3.5 million square feet of warehouse space at site, which is located next to the West Shore Expressway. The deal was expected to close next month. ProLogis had a short term inspection period to conduct due diligence, and the company elected not to proceed with the sale under the terms of the agreement. Yesterday, a ProLogis spokeswoman declined to say what concerns came up during its due diligence phase, but said ProLogis remains "interested" in the site.

In September, ISC announced that it had reached a preliminary deal with ProLogis, the publicly-traded Denver-based Fortune 1000 company and one of three top bidders for the former NASCAR site.

After taxes and broker fees, ISC expected to net $100 million from the sale of the land to ProLogis. That's what ISC paid for the site when it purchased it back in 2004.(silive.com)

Carl Long Has Sponsor, Needs Team

Millstar, an industry leader in producing die and mold profile tooling and solid carbide tools, has announced their continued sponsorship support of Carl Long and his 2008 racing endeavors. Millstar has been an active part of Carl Long Racing since 2006. In addition, Delcam, one of the world's leading suppliers of advanced CADCAM software product development solutions for the manufacturing industry, has announced their commitment to sponsor Carl Long in 2008. The Birmingham, United Kingdom company has had a history in motorsports, with most recent involvement in Formula One racing.

Carl Long and Delcam will kick off their new partnership at the 2007 Performance Racing Industry Trade Show next month. Carl Long will be on-hand at the Delcam booth during the 2007 Performance Racing Industry Trade Show in Orlando, Florida from December 6th through the 8th. Carl Long welcomes all race team representatives to stop on by and chat. [Note: this event is not open to the public, you must be a member of a racing industry company to attend]

"With Millstar and Delcam aboard, all we need now is the right race team to step up to the plate to make a successful combination", Carl Long states. "Being ready to run the 2008 [Daytona] 500 is definitely a realistic possibility at this point."

Also in 2008, Carl has plans to run selected NASCAR Nationwide Series races with his own team, as well as USAR Hooters Pro Cup Series races with Long Brothers Racing.(carl-long.com)

Speedway Plans Revealed

Officials representing Alabama Motorsports Park released an updated site plan Friday for the 2,200-acre motorsports and entertainment complex. The track, billed as a Dale Earnhardt Jr. Speedway, is a property of Gulf Coast Entertainment, LLC. The updated plan reflects changes to land use on the north and west sides of the property in Mobile County, Alabama.

The focal point of the plan is a 7/10ths-mile D-shaped asphalt speedway. The property will also include a 3-mile road course and karting track. The road course includes a straightaway that runs through the "Race City" retail area, providing a traditional road course and street circuit combination.

The complex is expected to be fully operational in 2010.(scenedaily.com)
